Overview of the Task

You are required to select a clinical or professional practice experience that occurred during a final year clinical placement (elective or core) to generate a topic to explore in this essay. The topic may be clinical or non-clinical in nature, but it must be relevant to the practice of physiotherapy. You are encouraged to discuss potential topic ideas with clinical supervisor(s) or other physiotherapists in your networks, to assist with refining topic focus and confirming relevance of topic to the physiotherapy profession. In this task you are expected to look at your chosen topic from multiple angles and compare, contrast and produce an integrated analysis of research evidence and other information sources and factors that you deem relevant to the analysis of your topic. Exploration of the topic will require the integration of systematic rapid review findings, personal reflections arising from your practice experiences and other sources of information relevant to your topic. Discussion of the topic should consider the relevance, significance, and implications of your analysis to your future physiotherapy practice.

The essay should include the following elements: 

• The professional practice experience described bears a logical relationship with the topic of the essay 
• The systematic rapid review methodology is described and well justified, with the results presented according to conventional standards.
• The clinical/professional relevance of the rapid review result is clearly stated
• Other factors considered relevant to the exploration of the topic, along with personal reflections based on clinical experience, are clearly described
• An integrated analysis of the research evidence, other relevant factors and personal examples is applied to the selected topic. A conclusion is drawn at the end of the analysis that demonstrates the application of evidence-informed practice principles.

The Academic Mentor guided the student through a structured and step-by-step approach to successfully complete the task while ensuring deep engagement with evidence-based practice principles.

Step 1: Topic Selection and Scope Definition

The mentor began by helping the student reflect on their final-year clinical placements to identify a meaningful clinical experience that revealed a challenge, uncertainty, or learning gap in patient care. The student was encouraged to ensure the topic had clear clinical relevance to physiotherapy practice. The mentor emphasized selecting a topic that allows integration of research evidence, reflection, and analysis such as pain management, mobility interventions, or patient education.

Step 2: Conducting the Systematic Rapid Review

Next, the mentor guided the student on how to conduct a systematic rapid review, focusing on defining a search strategy, identifying inclusion and exclusion criteria, and summarising key findings from relevant literature. The mentor explained how to justify the chosen methodology and synthesize research outcomes in alignment with academic conventions.

Step 3: Linking Research with Clinical Relevance

The mentor advised the student to connect the rapid review findings to their clinical context highlighting how the evidence supports or challenges current physiotherapy practices. This step ensured the essay demonstrated practical application of research evidence rather than purely theoretical discussion.
