Based on the results of my Work Environment Assessment, my workplace scored moderately on the civility scale. This suggests a work environment that is functional but has areas needing improvement in terms of sustained civility and mutual respect.

Assessment of Workplace Civility
Overall, I would rate my workplace as partially civil. There is a foundational culture of professionalism, and most team members maintain respectful relationships. However, the lack of accountability for certain behaviors and uneven enforcement of organizational values detracts from a truly civil environment. For example, while leadership encourages open dialogue, not all employees feel psychologically safe to voice concerns due to fear of backlash or being ignored.

Example of Workplace Incivility
One particular situation that stood out involved a team meeting where a senior colleague consistently interrupted and dismissed ideas presented by junior staff members. During a project discussion, a junior analyst offered a new data visualization tool, only to be interrupted and told, “That’s unnecessary—we’ve always done it this way.” This not only discouraged participation but created visible discomfort in the room.

This behavior was initially unaddressed, but after repeated incidents, another team member privately raised the issue with HR. HR facilitated a mediated conversation between the parties involved. The senior colleague later issued a public apology during a team meeting and agreed to participate in leadership training focused on communication and inclusion.

This experience highlighted the importance of speaking up and the value of formal channels for addressing incivility. However, it also revealed the need for more proactive measures, such as ongoing civility training and clearer expectations for behavior at all levels.
