  3. Discuss trends and issues and how these may determine the operations of the tourism, hospitality, and leisure industries.
  4. Critically appraise tourism, leisure and hospitality products and processes

TLH112 Assessment:

Individual Essay contributing 100% of module marks and assessing learning outcomes 1-4.

The various subjects have been explored in class and you are encouraged for the purpose of this essay to independently research the topic and represent balanced arguments and academic’s views on your chosen topic. The Assessment Guidance will offer some points to be discussed on your essay.

Discuss the historical developments which have contributed to the formation of the tourism industry and explore current trends and issues that are shaping the operations of the tourism, hospitality, and leisure industries.

To demonstrate your understanding of the Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality industry, its products, as well as characteristics and conditions of its environments, you could consider topics around:

  • Environmental Issues and Sustainability
  • Employment conditions, staff shortages and high staff turnover in the service sector
  • The impact of technological advancement and digital adoption
  • Political turmoil affecting tourism and hospitality
  • Impact of the gig economy on tourism and hospitality
  • Or, any other topics that you might see it appropriate

You are encouraged to read academic sources to support your work which include academic journal articles, books, statistics etc. Websites should be kept to a minimum and should not include Wikipedia.

  • You must demonstrate a minimum of TEN academic references, and these should be from varied types of sources and not just one book! You can never have too many references.
  • Do not use too many direct quotes. Indirect quotes have two advantages over direct quotes: they show you have understood what you have read and that you are able to incorporate it meaningfully into your essay.
  • In some situations, direct quotes are preferable; for example, where the actual words used are difficult or impossible to paraphrase. In all cases, academic material should be referenced and provide support for your argument.
