The research question that I have chosen is regarding the intersectionality of identity, particularly examining how do trans and queer individuals shape and construct their identities in the dynamics of modern society. Judith Butler has published the book in 1990 called Gender Trouble: Feminism and Subversion of Identity, which was surrounding his studies in trans and queer community. As I discovered this reading, I think it should be closely related to my research question as this seminal work is challenging the traditional understanding of gender and sexuality. Butler noted that instead of saying sexuality is the inherent qualities of people, it’s more appropriate to say that they are performative arts. In this book, Butler has also explored the complexities of fitting one’s identity into social norms and providing readers with a theoretical framework to understand identities.
To approach my research question, I’m thinking of using the primary data collection method of interviewing and secondary data collection method of finding references from books and research. These methods would be ethical because they respect one’s privacy as if people are willing to share their true self, they don’t have to be scared about being judged. Besides, this method can help gain lots of qualitative data because people can share their personal perspectives and subjective views on queer and trans identities.
This research question can be further connected to more aspects. For example, in modern society, it’s shown that trans and queer populations are still finding support from LGBTQ community. However, this raises the question for people to think as if societies outside LGBTQ community should advocate for LGBTQ rights and make more opportunities for trans and queer populations.
Besides, we can also think about media representations, for example, like how trans and queer identities are pictured in media sources. Additionally, if we talk more about intersectionality, this is the correlation between sexual orientation and gender identity, leading us to think of an equilibrium or an appropriate method for us to find a balance to determine one’s identity.
