ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION

The American founders had a particular view of human nature. They believed that humans were predictably selfish and corruptible. This is why they wanted the executive, legislative, and judicial branches to be insulated from one another. Human’s natural and predictable desire for power would force the three branches to keep one another in check since no one branch wanted to cede power to another. The goal was to prevent the accumulation of power into one set of hands, which is the definition of tyranny, according to Madison. After reading the Pestritto article, the Federalist Papers summary, and keeping the founding documents in mind, respond to the following:

  1. What is Pestritto’s view on the relationship between the founding principles that gave rise to the Constitution (47 and 51) and the principles that undergird the progressive era and the administrative state?
  2. Locate comments by Woodrow Wilson (in the article) that relate to sentiments in the Declaration (look to the list of grievances as well) and the Constitution. Do Wilson’s perspectives align with or contradict those founding documents? How?

Your assignment should be between 275 and 400 words and incorporate the 2+1 Rule: Remember to use at least two assigned readings from the current week and one from any previous week. Always complete the Application Assignment before doing the Reflection Assignment.
