To Prepare:

  • Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you selected in Module 2 and the four systematic reviews (or other filtered high-level evidence) you selected in Module 3.
  • Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you selected in Module 2 and analyzed in Module 3.
  • Review and download the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template provided in the Resources.

The Assignment (Evidence-Based Project)

Part 3A: Critical Appraisal of Research

Conduct a critical appraisal of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected by completing the Evaluation Table within the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template. Choose a total of four peer- reviewed articles that you selected related to your clinical topic of interest in Module 2 and Module 3.

Note: You can choose any combination of articles from Modules 2 and 3 for your Critical Appraisal. For example, you may choose two unfiltered research articles from Module 2 and two filtered research articles (systematic reviews) from Module 3 or one article from Module 2 and three articles from Module 3. You can choose any combination of articles from the prior Module Assignments as long as both modules and types of studies are represented.

Part 3B: Critical Appraisal of Research

Based on your appraisal, in a 1-2-page critical appraisal, suggest a best practice that emerges from the research you reviewed. Briefly explain the best practice, justifying your proposal with APA citations of the research.

The Role of Evidence-Based Practice in Achieving the Quadruple Aim in Healthcare

Tiara Sank

Essentials of Evidence-Based Practice

Dr. Usama Saleh

May 30, 2024

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a critical approach in healthcare that integrates clinical expertise, patient values, and the best available evidence to improve patient outcomes (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2023). Its impact on the Quadruple Aim, which includes enhancing patient experience, improving population health, reducing costs, and improving the work life of healthcare providers, is profound and multifaceted.

Firstly, EBP positively affects the customers, leading to individualized, safe nursing care. It is possible, in the light of evidence and recent empirical knowledge, to more effectively address the needs of patients. This approach helps enhance the efficiency of the treatments and increases patients’ satisfaction and trust. For example, engaging patients in constructing these care plans and following up with guidelines informed by scientific literature regarding chronic illnesses may promote improved overall health outcomes and patient satisfaction (Crabtree et al., 2016).

Secondly, working based on the principles of EBP improves the population’s health because the measures and treatment regimens implemented are scientifically proven and include preventive actions. Programs, especially vaccination and other public health activities organized by the government and implemented in collaboration with different stakeholders, rely on research that confirms the effectiveness of the reduction of the disease’s spread and the improvement of health status within the general population. PB indicates that it facilitates the objective appreciation of health disparities and subsequently allows the implementation of practice changes that are known to improve individuals’ health (Kim et al., 2016).

Thirdly, one must agree that evidence-based practice contributes to the deficit in healthcare costs. Thus, using research findings in clinical practice is called for to expunge avoidable procedures, decrease hospital readmissions, and prevent medical mistakes. These changes inevitably result in better resource utilization, for instance, and in the provision of substantial cost reductions. For example, implementing gram-positive bacteria for surgeries can decrease complications after the surgery, making retaining hospital stays and other related treatments costly (Sikka et al., 2015).

Finally, EBP contributes to the work life of healthcare providers since they learn while practicing the EBP in an ongoing process of professional development. When the providers have access to the evidence for practice and the best evidence, they are in a better position to deliver Optimal care to the clients, which in turn gives them job satisfaction rather than burnout. Further, engaging the healthcare providers in the process of synthesizing and applying evidence-based guidelines is likely to improve their perceived levels of decisional authority and professional satisfaction, which may, in turn, yield a more effective, proficient, and work-commensurate organizational culture (Sikka et al., 2015).

In conclusion, EBP is crucial in attaining the Quadruple Aim of healthcare. EBP presents the solution for adding value to quality, efficiency, and patient satisfaction by promoting a positive patient experience, health status, value, and healthcare professional’s work experience. HCOs with integrated EBP can handle modern-day healthcare delivery and fashion out enhanced, long-term quality outcomes.

**Note on Conceptual Framework

· The following information is from Walden academic guides which helps explain conceptual frameworks and the reasons they are used in research. Here is the link https://academicguides.waldenu.edu/library/conceptualframework

· Researchers create theoretical and conceptual frameworks that include a philosophical and methodological model to help design their work. A formal theory provides context for the outcome of the events conducted in the research. The data collection and analysis are also based on the theoretical and conceptual framework.

· As stated by Grant and Osanloo (2014), “Without a theoretical framework, the structure and vision for a study is unclear, much like a house that cannot be constructed without a blueprint. By contrast, a research plan that contains a theoretical framework allows the dissertation study to be strong and structured with an organized flow from one chapter to the next.”

· Theoretical and conceptual frameworks provide evidence of academic standards and procedure. They also offer an explanation of why the study is pertinent and how the researcher expects to fill the gap in the literature.

· Literature does not always clearly delineate between a theoretical or conceptual framework. With that being said, there are slight differences between the two.
