    Instructions

Return to the topic you chose in week 3. Articulate a specific dilemma in a situation faced by a particular person based on that topic. The situation can be real or fictional.

    • Summarize the dilemma.
    • Define any needed key terms associated with the dilemma.
    • Analyze the conflicts or controversies involved in the dilemma.

Revise and rewrite based on any feedback you received in your previous post (week three). Reference and discuss any professional code of ethics relevant to your topic such as the AMA code for doctors, the ANA code for nurses, etc.  State whether and how your chosen topic involves any conflicts between professional and familial duties or conflicts between loyalty to self and loyalty to a community or nation.

What in your view is the most moral thing for that person to do in that dilemma? Why is that the most moral thing? Use moral values and logical reasoning to justify your answer

    Next, apply the following:

    • Aristotle’s Golden Mean to the dilemma
    • Utilitarianism to the dilemma
    • Natural Law ethics to the dilemma

Which of those three theories works best ethically speaking? Why that one?

Why do the other two not work or not work as well?

Is it the same as what you said is the most moral thing earlier? Why or why not?

Use the 5 articles from your annotated bibliography to support your answers. (Additional academic scholarly research from the past 5 years can be included as well.)

Include a reference page in APA format that includes your bibliography with the annotations removed and any other sources used.

    My Child Care Essay Outline

    Points: 20

    Due Date: 10/19/2024

Create a comprehensive and thoughtful essay that not only highlights your passion for child care but also shows your readiness to learn and grow through the course.

    1.  Introduction:

    ●       Start with a hook: Begin with a statement or question that draws the reader in, such as:

    ○       “Caring for young children has always been my passion, and now I am taking steps to turn that passion into a successful child care center.”

    ○ “As a future child care provider, I understand that managing a daycare is about more than just providing a safe space—it’s about creating an environment where children thrive.”

    ●       Introduce the purpose of the essay: Explain that you are either currently running a child care center or plan to open one in the future, and discuss why you have chosen to take this course.

    ○       Example: “This essay explores my vision for my child care center, the reasons behind my decision to pursue this course, and my expectations for what I hope to gain from it.”

    2.  Background and Motivation:

    ●       Discuss your background in child care:

    ○       Do you currently own or work at a child care center? Describe your role and responsibilities.

    ○ If you don’t have a child care center yet, explain what inspired you to start one. Share any relevant experiences with children (e.g., babysitting, teaching, or volunteering).

    ○ Example: “I have worked as a preschool teacher for the past five years, and during that time, I have seen the difference that a well-managed child care center can make in a child’s life. This inspired me to pursue my dream of opening my own center.” ● Explain your passion for child care:

    ○ Why are you interested in providing care for children?

    ○ How do you feel a high-quality child care program can impact children and their families?

    ○ Example: “My passion for child care stems from a belief that every child deserves a nurturing environment where they can learn and grow. I want to create a space where children feel safe, loved, and excited to learn every day.”

    3.  Description of Your Child Care Center (Current or Future):

    ●       If you already have a child care center:

    ○       Describe your child care center: What is the name of your center? How many children do you serve? What age groups do you cater to?

    ○ Discuss the philosophy and values that guide your center’s operations.

    ○ Example: “My child care center, Little Explorers, serves children ages 2 to 5. We focus on a play-based learning approach that encourages curiosity and social skills development.”

    ●       If you plan to open a child care center in the future:

    ○       Describe your vision for the center: What type of child care center do you want to open? (e.g., home-based, center-based, infant care, preschool program)

    ○ What are your goals for the center? (e.g., providing a safe environment, promoting early learning, supporting working families)

    ○ Example: “I plan to open a home-based child care center that caters to infants and toddlers, providing a cozy, personalized environment where children feel at home. My goal is to support early brain development through interactive play and nurturing care.”

    4.  Challenges and Goals:

    ●       Discuss potential challenges of running a child care center:

    ○       What challenges do you anticipate (or currently face) in managing a child care program? (e.g., balancing finances, hiring qualified staff, meeting state regulations, maintaining a high level of care)

    ○ How do you hope this course will help you overcome these challenges?

    ○ Example: “One challenge I anticipate is managing the financial aspects of running a child care center, such as budgeting and handling tuition payments. I hope that this course will provide me with the tools and knowledge needed to keep my center financially sustainable.”

    ●       Outline your goals for the child care center:

    ○       What do you hope to achieve in the short term (e.g., attract new families, expand the facility) and in the long term (e.g., become a community resource, provide scholarships)?

    ○ Example: “In the short term, my goal is to attract families who value a nurturing, child-centered approach. In the long term, I hope to expand my program to serve more children and offer scholarships for low-income families.” 5. Expectations from the Child Care Operations Management Course:

    ●       Explain why you enrolled in the course:

    ○       What specific skills or knowledge are you hoping to gain?

    ○ Are you looking to learn more about business management, child development, or regulatory compliance?

    ○ Example: “I enrolled in this course because I want to learn how to effectively manage the business side of my child care center, from budgeting to marketing. I also hope to gain a better understanding of state licensing requirements to ensure that my center meets all regulations.”

    ●       Discuss how you believe the course will benefit your child care program:

    ○       How do you think the course content will help you improve your center’s operations or help you plan for a future center?

    ○ Example: “I believe that this course will help me create a comprehensive operations manual, which will serve as a guide for staff and ensure consistency in the care we provide. Additionally, I am eager to learn more about marketing strategies to reach new families in my community.”

    ●       Mention your commitment to growth and learning:

    ○       Show that you are open to new ideas and willing to apply what you learn to your child care business.

    ○ Example: “I am committed to continuous improvement and believe that this course will be an invaluable resource in helping me become a better leader and advocate for children and families.”

    6. Conclusion:

    ●       Summarize your main points: Briefly recap your background, your vision for the child care center, and what you hope to gain from the course.

    ●       End with a positive statement: Share your excitement about the course and your vision for the future.

    ○ Example: “I am excited to take this next step in my journey as a child care provider. With the skills and knowledge I gain from this course, I am confident that I will be able to create a child care center that not only meets the needs of children and their families but also fosters a love for learning that will last a lifetime.”

    2.2 Discussion. Gratitude

    Getting Started

There are a variety of methods to assess and evaluate one’s character. The Values in Action (VIA) character strengths, developed by Christopher Peterson and Martin Seligman, can help identify character strengths you have that predict well-being. PERMA, a theory developed by Martin Seligman, identifies five elements of well-being: positive emotions, engagement, positive relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. According to research, these five elements all correlate to each other, as well as the VIA character strengths. However, only gratitude and love of learning were positive predictors of well-being.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

    ·        Evaluate theories and research related to gratitude and their implication to positive psychology and life coaching.

    Background Information

For this discussion, you will focus on gratitude as a positive predictor of well-being. Which theories relate to the concept of gratitude and is there substantive research supporting this element? How might you apply gratitude in your practice, with a deeper understanding of the concept? You will discuss these factors, and more, in this activity.

    2.1 Discussion.Positive Psychology and God’s Commandments

    Getting Started

When we think of the Ten Commandments, many of us usually think of things we either should or should not do, things that we will “get in trouble for” if we do them or fail to do them. The very word “commandment” looms overhead and threatens us with judgment and harsh punishment.

Perhaps we even imagine the Living God revealing Himself in the burning bush to Moses, flames billowing high into the air, scaring poor Moses half to death with the thundering words,

“Do not come any closer; take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground!” (Exodus 3:5)

Then, these commandments were written on tablets of stone by the very finger of God:

“I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

“Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

“Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you.

    “You shall not murder.

    “You shall not commit adultery.

    “You shall not steal.

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife; and you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.” (Exodus 20:2–17)

What if God intended the Ten Commandments not to loom over us or to threaten us, but rather to keep us safe and to help us to flourish in our lives? What if these commandments are meant to guide us into deeper and deeper experiences of lasting “happiness”?

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

    ·        Share your perspective on the Commandments.

    ·        Identify ways in which the Commandments can be linked with well-being and life satisfaction.

    Background Information

What might the basic constructs from positive psychology have to do with God’s Commandments? First, let’s consider the perspective that the Commandments were not meant to harm us, but to heal us, direct us, and lead us into lives of abundance and goodness. God’s plans for us are those that bring about prosperity. If this is so, then wouldn’t it stand to reason that the Commandments are to be followed for our own safety, prosperity, and goodness?

In positive psychology, happiness, flourishing, and well-being are all important constructs—not only to researchers in the field but to most others who pursue overall success and satisfaction in life. But in our pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness, we may have taken the wrong path. We may have forgotten that the path to true “happiness” is through righteousness and right action. Instead, many if not most of us have pursued material things, financial success, and even higher educational goals. Research is now showing that well-being and life satisfaction are not linked to money, higher education, or even physical attractiveness.

So what does this insight have to do with the Ten Commandments? Perhaps the things that will bring us true happiness and well-being are found in our relationships—relationships with others and with God. Perhaps the things that will bring us true happiness and well-being are found in healthy families and in honoring those who are our superiors. Perhaps the things that will bring us true happiness and well-being are found in meaningful endeavors and a good day’s work. This is what both the research in positive psychology and scripture are telling us.

As we move through this course, we will give careful consideration to how the basic constructs and research findings from positive psychology underscore the Truth found in God’s Word, specifically in His Commandments.

2.4 Assignment. Personal Reflections on Gratitude

    Getting Started

Is gratitude more than platitudes? How can it be for you? According to positive psychology researchers, gratitude is related to well-being. But what does it mean to be grateful or to feel gratitude for something? How do you define it and how do you integrate it into your daily life so that it contributes to your well-being? You will explore these questions and more in this assignment.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

    ·        Demonstrate how you can utilize gratitude for spiritual and personal development.

    Background Information

For this assignment, review the ebook The Gratitude Factor to identify relevant chapters or passages that help you better understand and integrate the concept of gratitude in your life. At a minimum, read Chapters 1 and 2. Scrutinize your ideas of gratitude and compare them to the book. Why, when, and how might you integrate gratitude? Does it apply merely when you are focused on something really great that occurred (or really bad: “Well, it could have been worse!”)? Then, you will write about how you better understand gratitude, as well as how you plan to utilize it for your own spiritual and personal development. If relevant, you may also write about how gratitude is related to your capstone project. Ensure for this assignment that you use scholarly support to avoid being “Pollyanna-ish” about gratitude.

2.3 Assignment. Introduction to Literature Review Draft

    Getting Started

You completed a literature review assignment in PSY-535, which focused on research methods. Use your experiences with that assignment to help improve and enhance the literature review that you will complete for this course. As you work on your literature review, keep in mind that the focus of this course is on research findings and the application of those findings. Additionally, your emphasis for the literature review for this course should be your capstone project. Thus, you will want to deepen your understanding and application of the results that you will read about in the scholarly articles you locate for the literature review for this course, as well as gather materials and resources for your capstone project.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

    ·        Draft an introduction of a literature review.

    Background Information

For this assignment, you will do a search of the scholarly literature on a topic related to your specialization in life coaching and positive psychology, focusing on your capstone project. Then, you will select a minimum of two articles and write your literature review introduction. Ensure that you emphasize research findings and application of the findings to life coaching and positive psychology. Recall that in PSY-535, you were informed that you will need to read quite a large number of articles to start learning about the big picture and themes of the topic you are interested in, as well as to gain a good sense of the story or current state of the field. This holds true for the literature review you will complete for this course, as well.

    Instructions

    1.   Review the following resources (originally reviewed in PSY-535):

    a.   Article: Happiness, Excellence, and Optimal Functioning Revisited: Examining the Peer-Reviewed Literature Linked to Positive Psychology(new tab)

    b.   File: What is a Literature Review? (PDF)(new tab)

    c.   Article: How to Write a Stellar Literature Review(new tab)

    d.   File: Literature Review Outline(Word document)

    e.   Webpage: Organizing Your Social Sciences Research Paper: The Literature Review(new tab)

    2.   Conduct a literature search, selecting two articles on research findings and applications in the field of life coaching and psychology. Write a minimum two-page, APA-formatted draft of the introduction to your literature review, including the topic.

    a.   Using the Literature Review Outline (Word)(Word document), describe the overall topic that you have been investigating, why it is important to the field, why you are interested in the topic, and how it relates to your possible capstone project.

    b.   Identify themes and trends in research findings and applications in the field. Write a “big picture” of the literature.
