The objective of the assignment on syncretism and the Magi is to explore how the Gospel and culture dynamics are intertwined and to expose you to how the interpreters of biblical texts also approach them from their particular contexts. A major question to be raised when ministering in diverse contexts today is whose context matters in handling biblical texts and whose is marginalized and, thus, delegitimized. Think through who makes these decisions and how these decisions are and have been made.
In addition to Peter Schineller’s article on syncretism, it is important to think about this issue from a biblical perspective. Therefore, reflect on the story of the Magi in Matthew 2. The Magi represent a wisdom tradition separate from the wisdom tradition of the Jews.
