An Energy Balance Assessment for a Cohort of Nutrition and Dietetic Students Using Energy Intake and Energy Expenditure Analysis over a Three-Day Period
Word count: 2110
Abstract
Background: A healthy state eliminates associations linked conditions linked to poor health and in many cases, death. This state underpins the concept of energy balance’ which is achieved when energy intake equals energy expenditure. Understanding energy balance is vital in addressing many non-communicable diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and malnutrition. The aim of this study is to identify whether a cohort of students were in energy balance during a 3-day period.
Methods: Energy intake was assessed using a 3-day weighed record and analysed using Nutritics software. Energy expenditure was estimated by predicting basal metabolic rate (BMR) using the Henry equation (2005). Participants took physical activity logs over the 3-day period to record type and duration of activity and the corresponding physical activity ratio (PAR). Total energy expenditure was calculated by multiplying BMR with PAR and duration of each activity. SPSS was used to analyse data by performing Pearson’s correlations and a paired samples t-test.
Results: The results showed that the cohort of students were —in/not in—— energy balance. The relationship between energy intake and expenditure was shown to be statistically significant/not statistically significant (at p = ?). A statistically significant, moderate/weak/strong, positive correlation (r = ?) (p = ?) was found between energy expenditure and weight. The difference between energy intake and energy expenditure was shown to be significant (t = ?) (p = ?).
Conclusion: The cohort was/was not in energy balance during the 3-day period. The accuracy of results is subject to limitations from ?
