Capstone Assignment 1
What is the threat?
My topic selection was based on the chapter ‘Extreme Storms’ of the U.S. Global Change Research Program report. These storms can have devastating consequences and can lead to the destruction of vast areas. Such storms include hurricanes, tornadoes, and severe thunderstorms. Infrastructure, agriculture, and human lives can suffer from these catastrophic influences. Such disasters usually lead to severe damage to infrastructure (buildings, roads, electricity networks), which prevents the locals from functioning normally and causes economic losses (U.S. Global Change Research Program). Furthermore, extreme storms induce death and social displacement of populations and aggravate humanitarian and social crises. Amidst intensifying climate change, such storms are likely to become more frequent and more severe, leading to the call for adaptation measures to reduce the impacts.
Why is that place/region vulnerable?
The United States Gulf Coast is among the zones that are most at risk of getting hit by massive storms. Tropical storms have low-lying coastal areas vulnerable to storm surge and flooding because the warm sea surface, which fuels hurricane intensities, also makes this region extremely prone to storm surge and flooding (U.S. Global Change Research Program). Besides this, the extent of the Gulf Coast is densely populated with many urban centers and significant infrastructure sitting along its coastline, thus multiplying the risk of damage and loss of life.
What are the forecasts in terms of environmental change?
Data analysis points towards the fact that as the climate changes, the occurrence and strength of extreme weather will be on the rise. The warmer ocean temperature gives more energy to storms to form and intensify, and hence, there is a higher occurrence of severe hurricanes and similar weather events.
What are the forecasted impacts on communities?
Impacts of climate change on populations inland will be exacerbated in the low-lying Gulf Coast, like the increased risks for property damage, displacements, disruptions of critical infrastructure such as power grids and transportation networks, and adverse effects on local economies, mainly depending on vulnerable sectors such as tourism industry and fishing (US Global Change Research Program).
What are the solutions? (if applicable)
To cope with the critical problem of more extreme storms, adaptive approaches need to be developed. Such may be synonymous with funding infrastructures with resilience, issuance of advanced early warning systems, planning land use to keep the risk away from coastal hazards, and efforts to limit the emissions of greenhouse gases that are the agents of climate change.
