N 129 L/ N 534 L: Community Psych/Mental Health Experience
Community Interview Assignment
GUIDELINES/STEPS:
WHO: IDENTIFY an individual to interview who may have experienced a traumatic event or who you have reason to believe is experiencing distress and/or mental or emotional disequilibrium. (unhoused, lonely, sad, distressed, confused, anxious, angry, overwhelmed, withdrawn, isolated, abused, etc.)
ARRANGE to meet this individual for a preliminary session to perform a basic assessment to confirm your impression re #1 and obtain consent for the interview. This may not require 2 meetings. If only one meeting is needed, you must be prepared by having the following steps completed.
THEN, PRIOR TO INTERVIEW:
Think carefully about how to structure the conversation, including how you will include introduction, focus, topics, sensitivity, appropriate inquiry, questions, time, pace, attention, closure.
Establish goals for yourself, e.g., presentation, active listening, identification of issues for individual, assessment skill, communication, self-awareness, ability to be flexible during interview.
Establish goals for the individual, e.g., + response to encounter, openness, expression, honesty, self-awareness, ability to connect.
Review principles of therapeutic communication prior to interview.
Identify a few resources in community or on line related to the issue the person is struggling with.
REMINDER: The conversation is centered on the person, not on you! #1 skill is being a skilled listener. People want to be seen and heard. In one interview, you will not “solve” the issue or “fix the person. You are providing a supportive ear.
