MGT5222MGT5275 QuestionDescription of Activity

Choose one of the operations outlined in the list below. You should be able to complete the assessment by observing the operation – you should not in any way disrupt the organisation delivering the operation.

For your chosen operation:

  • Provide a brief background of the operation the report is analysing. Identify the main components of the transformation process, including inputs, outputs and the key elements of the transformation. [20% of grade]
  • Analyse the operations performance objectives for the process, clearly identifying order winners and order qualifiers. Remember that order winners and qualifiers exist at the level of the product (goods and/or services) and that a business is not an order winner or order qualifier. [20% of grade]
  • Show how the operations design enables the operation to deliver the good(s) and/or service(s) that are the output of the transformation process and, in doing so, to deliver (or fail to deliver) the order winners and order qualifiers of the operation. [60% of grade]

Choose one (and only one!) operation from this list (you should not choose any of the University of Glasgow eating venues):

  • A sit-down restaurant (not a take-away only service);
  • A museum or art gallery:
  • A cinema;
  • A supermarket;
  • A transport hub;
  • A tourist attraction that you can visit, either in and around Glasgow or elsewhere (it is in line with the course coordinator,doubt, Alison.Smart@glasgow.ac.uk);
  • A library.

You should use material from the course and from your broader reading of the textbook and other sources to support your analysis.

The content should demonstrate the application of concepts, frameworks and tools drawn from operations management, whether this is from materials presented in lectures, your reading of the textbook, or broader reading.

  • The maximum word count is 1,500 words excluding the list of references, appendices, figures and tables.
  • Appropriate citation and referencing must be used to acknowledge the sources you use for frameworks, tools and theories.
  • All sources should be referenced using the Harvard style. This is a standard format that is very easy to use and is the norm in Management. In-text citations of sources should be used to show sources, and the full reference should be included in the reference list.
