Toxic Workplace Culture

The most common ethical issues in the workplace are discrimination, harassment, and favoritism. Discrimination in the workplace occurs when an individual gets denied a job or receives unfair treatment due to their race, religion, disability, sex, or any legally protected characteristics. Harassment is when unwanted behavior occurs. Favoritism occurs when a manager and employee develop a friendship that’s more beyond the workplace. Discrimination, harassment, and favoritism all play an important factor in the ethic issue of toxic workplace culture.

A federal law which prohibits job discrimination is Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin (U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2009). This law does not include the prohibition of weight discrimination. The workplace could weight discriminate, because physical appearance is important to them. A 2008 study conducted by researchers at Yale University, found that 10% of women and 5% of men had experienced discrimination based on their weight, and were denied the job (Time, 2017). It’s unethical to deny someone a job, because they do not look like your idea of the “perfect image” that you are trying to promote for your company. This mindset also negatively affects the business, they’re not making as much money as they could be. There are numerous stores that only offer size small clothing, such as Brandy Melville, and their employees are petite themselves. This sends a message to plus-size girls that they are not welcome in the store, since they offer no sizes that fit their body. This kind of message damages a female’s self-esteem, and it pressures the employees to stay their certain weight. Brandy Melville fuels eating disorders by propagating an ideal body shape (Daily Trojan, 2013). This kind of mindset is why we have such a toxic workplace culture going on.

While managers get to know their employees, they tend to pick favorites. Managers will give their favorite employees more scheduled hours, and they will give them special treatment. Harassment could occur anytime during the workplace, it involves unwanted behavior whether it be verbal or physical. It’s unfair to the general employees who are just trying to make a living to support their families, while management likes to play favoritism.

The toxic workplace culture has been an ethical issue for quite some time, and there has not been any improvements. Stores continue to offer clothing with just one size, but then wonder why they receive backlash for it, and they still have not even thought about selling clothing with more variety of sizes. It just proves that even with federal laws that prohibit discrimination, businesses will continue to discriminate off the person’s body weight. Today’s workplace culture is way too toxic, unprofessional, and unethical. There must be changes made.
