Discuss the value of Jane Elliott’s approach to revealing prejudice in her blue/green eye exercise and Malcolm Gladwell’s assertion in “Blink” that the only way to move implicit attitudes (ones held within us that we may

Assignment: Create a Word document containing your answers. Save it as your last name & first initial + Midterm (so mine would be Jimenez J Final-Short Answer). Upload the file as an attachment and click submit.

 Format Requirements:

  • Name, Professor, date, class & Final-Short Answer Exam on the first page in the upper left corner
  • Last name and pg# in upper right header of all subsequent pages
  • Double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font

 Content Requirements:

  • Answer any FOUR prompts from the FIVE listed below.
  • Length – each response should be a full paragraph (roughly 300-500 words).
  • Each response should have cited quotes/paraphrases from the course material to support your answers done in MLA style.
  • Creation of an MLA Works Cited page at the end of the document containing all your sources.
  • Use of specific examples & detail as asked for in the prompts.
  • Academic & professional tone
  • Proper spelling and grammar to the best of your ability

Short-Answer Final: Think carefully about your answers so that you can be settled in your own mind as you write. If you are confused, then you will write in a confusing way. If you don’t understand what you think clearly enough to put it down in a simple and direct way, then you need to think on it some more. Be thorough; most of these ask for your opinion or interpretation, not necessarily a “correct” answer.

Part of being thorough & clear in your opinions is being able to support them, so you are asked to provide textual evidence with some of your answers. This means you will use quotes or paraphrases (putting material in your own words) with in-text citations. There is a folder called MLA Citation Help in the Midterm folder that offers more information, but the basics of citation are:

  • Anytime you use word-for-word material from a source (print, interview, web, video, etc.), you must put that material in quote marks.
  • Anytime you use an idea or concept from a source, even if you put it in your own words, you must cite/give credit to the original source of that idea/concept.
  • An in-text MLA style citation goes at the end of the sentence you’re citing & uses parentheses, the author of the work (or title, if there is no author), & the page number, if available. For Web sources use the number 1 if no page is shown)
  • An example of a citation looks like this (Garcia 3).

 Instructions:

Select FOUR of the following FIVE prompts & answer each prompt in at least one complete paragraph (roughly 300-500 words) that thoroughly answers the prompt. Please be sure to provide examples from the texts as requested to back up your claim. When finished, save your document & upload it to the drop box by the due date.

 #1

Gladwell says that thin-slicing is not “deliberate prejudice.” Briefly explain how ethnocentrism & perception can cause prejudices (deliberate or not) like those Gladwell talks about in his chapter. Please use the text to explain/support your answer.

#2

Discuss the value of Jane Elliott’s approach to revealing prejudice in her blue/green eye exercise and Malcolm Gladwell’s assertion in “Blink” that the only way to move implicit attitudes (ones held within us that we may not even be aware of) is through experience, changing our lives so that we are exposed to those unlike us on a regular and positive basis. Then explain which you think is more effective as a means of attaining real change. Support your answer with quotes/support from the course readings or your own research.

#3

Briefly explain how our privileges influence our implicit biases.

 #4

In your own words, briefly explain how Allport’s scale shows that prejudice/oppression, even at its “lowest” level is problematic.

 #5

What are ways in which other micro cultural intersections (such as race, religion, or class, for example) that you think can change or impact a woman or gender non-conforming person’s experiences in society?
