Critically examining a specific information policy and law issue with reference to the literature on the subject
Judging the legal and ethical considerations facing the information professional when implementing policies and procedures
BRIEF
Managing access to information resources poses legal and ethical challenges to librarians and information managers. Select a sector and discuss the main legal and ethical issues that are faced in that sector when facilitating access to information for e.g. users, clients, students and employees. You are free to choose any library sector e.g. public, academic, or school libraries OR a corporate workplace or public sector body.
Define the information challenges faced in your chosen sector
Discuss systems and procedures that are put in place to manage information access
Analyse the legal and ethical issues that information professionals must be mindful of in managing access, and the professional tensions these might present.
Your essay should demonstrate significant engagement with the course materials on the topic, and evidence of strong background reading of quality peer-reviewed academic literature. Your essay may also include “grey literature’ such as government and industry reports and policy documents as well as legal cases and news articles where relevant.
FORMAT
This is an individual assignment of 4000 words (+/- 10%).
The essay must be submitted in MS Word format only via MyPlace by 23:59:59 (midnight)
on Thursday 13th November 2025.
