     Roger Brown

                                                                                                                     Case Study

Roger Brown is a 30-year-old black male arrested for  aggravated assault. Roger was originally placed on 5 years’ probation  for possession of crack cocaine in January 2022.  Roger has a history of  mental health disorders and has been on the mental health probation  case load previously. Roger has a long history of being on and off his  psychotropic medication. Roger was off his medication during the last  incident when he was arrested. Roger is currently on a high level of  supervision reporting twice monthly to probation officials. Roger has  been reporting as instructed and available for home visits, as required.

Roger was hanging out at a local convenience store when he  got into a verbal argument with another male at the store.  The subject  of the argument is unknown to officials at this time. The store owner  came out and asked both men to leave the premises. Roger refused and  began to argue with the store owner, as well.   Roger became combative  and  struck the store owner with his backpack. The owner fell, hit his  head on a concrete, and suffered a head injury requiring 25 stitches.     Roger ran away from the scene.  Roger was arrested a week later by  police at his probation appointment.

Roger is currently employed as a construction worker  (11  months) and living at home with his mother. Roger’s mother is currently  unemployed.  Roger’s mother reports he does well at home and does not  give her any problems. She reports he pays most of the bills for there  household.  However, the neighbors report there are often loud arguments  and the smell of marijuana coming from the backyard.

Roger does not have a GED or HS diploma. Roger did complete a  city sponsored program that helped him get the job in construction.   Roger’s boss reports Roger is a good employee and has not missed a day  of work. Roger is married but is currently separated from his wife and  child at this time. Roger is also non-compliant with a child support  order and in arrears for 6,000 dollars. Roger has had no contact with  his wife or child.

Roger did test positive for THC and trace amounts of PCP when  given a drug test at the probation department. This will be his first  time testing positive for drugs. Roger has been going to see his MH  counselor and psychiatrist but has been dishonest about taking his  required medications. Rogers’s labs report he has not taken his meds in  quite some time.

What is your plan of action for Roger? You need to be detailed and address the specific issues outlined in his case.

You do not have to address the specific law violations for this case study.

Use Chapter 6  as a resource for your plan for Roger.

    Please fully explain your logic.

  • Assertiveness, or assertion, is standing up for personal rights and expressing thoughts, feelings, and beliefs in direct, honest, and appropriate ways that do not violate another person’s rights.

Communication is a continuous process. Expressing your needs and solutions is better received when using “”I” messages instead of accusatory messages (which can cause a person to shut-down and not communicate).

Assertiveness, or assertion, is standing up for personal rights and expressing thoughts, feelings, and beliefs in direct, honest, and appropriate ways that do not violate another person’s rights.

Assertiveness involves the use of “I” messages, for example: “This is what I think.” “This is what I feel.” “This is how I see the situation.” These types of messages express “who the person is” and are said without dominating, humiliating, or degrading the other person.

“Assertiveness involves respect—not deference. Deference is acting in a subservient manner as though the other person is right or better simply because the other person is older, more powerful, experienced, knowledgeable, or is of a different sex or race. Deference is present when people express themselves in ways that are self-effacing, appeasing, or overly apologetic.”  With assertion, one must communicate respect for self and for others.

There are six basic types of assertive messages. With a specific person in mind, write your six assertive messages to her/him.

    • I want statements help to clarify to both yourself and others what you really want. For example, “I want you to call when you are going to be late.”
    • I feel statements help express your feelings without attacking the other per- son. For example, “I feel embarrassed when you criticize my clothes in front of my friends.”
    • Mixed feelings statements name more than one feeling and explain where each is coming from. For example, “I enjoy going out and doing things with you, yet I feel it is unfair that you frequently do not bring enough money and ask me to pay for you.”
    • Empathic assertion presents some sensitive understanding about the other person and then expresses how you feel. For example, “I know you said that you are angry and do not want to talk about it. However, I feel we need to talk about it when you feel ready.”
    • Confrontive assertion is necessary when there are contradictions such as differences between what a person says and what she or he does. For example, “I know you said you would teach the newer students some of the beginning information as part of your internship, yet you consistently put them off or do not show up for appointments.
    •  I language assertion is useful for expressing difficult negative feelings. For example, “When you cancel a weekend event with me because you say you are busy working and then I find out you went out with someone else, I feel rejected and humiliated. I need for you to be honest with me about why you do things or it could damage our friendship.”

  • Your final research project will consist of a literature review on a specific category of psychological testing.

Your final research project will consist of a literature review on a specific category of psychological testing. Please review the Week 7 Assignment for details.

In Week 7 of this course, you will be asked to submit a literature review similar to a manuscript’s introduction for a research paper. This will provide a conceptual overview of a topic related to tests and measurements, synthesizing for the reader what research has been conducted on the topic, what is currently known about the topic and what is not (yet) known. This paper should NOT simply list previous studies that have been conducted and what was done in those studies. Instead, you should build a story about what the status of current knowledge is on your topic based on your scholarly examination of the literature; your synthesis of the literature on this topic as an author must be clear in this literature review.

For Week 6 (this week), you will submit an outline of the introductory literature review. It should include in-text citations and references to at least 10 peer-reviewed journal articles.

Please note that the outline should not contain Roman numerals or alphabet-style labels.  Labels will be headings that would be appropriate for the paper. Use paragraph form to describe what you will discuss in each section (see below):

    For the Week 6 outline:

    1. First, give a brief overview of what your paper topic is and what you will accomplish in the paper (thesis statement)

    2. Use headings to group the major themes (and subthemes) you will cover in the paper. Be specific with your headings and check that they match what you are discussing (with the same level of specificity).

    3. Under each heading, briefly describe what you will discuss in the section and use in-text citations to support the major points you will make. Begin paragraphs with the main point you will make in the section, then use citations to support that point. Note- citations should be integrated into paragraph form to demonstrate what specific points they will support. Citations should NOT simply be listed at the end of the paragraph. Demonstrate how the citations support the point(s) you are making.  This will help you prepare for synthesis (looking across multiple studies) rather than a simple point-by-point (reporting) approach. Expect to have multiple citations under each heading. If you have a proposed section with only one citation, note that you will search for/include more in the final paper.

    4. Use at least 10 scholarly peer-reviewed articles.  You may include more, as 10 is the minimum (not maximum).

    5. Use APA style, including the title page, appropriate grammar, spelling, mechanics, citations, and references.

Outline examples will be discussed in KL (Week 6).  Attend or watch the recording before submitting the assignment.

Applied Psychology in Criminal Justice is published twice a year and publishes research on the intersection of psychology and criminal justice as well as the social and psychological aspects of human behavior. It covers a lot of different topics such as diversity, social organization, crime victims, social networks, recidivism rates, murder trials, police legitimacy and many more topics. What I noticed about the topics is it made me question where psychology comes into different topics such as recidivism rates and police legitimacy. I read two articles to gain a better idea of the research, “Perceptions of Criminal Responsibility through the Lens of Race” and I was intrigued by these articles to see how they pertained to the topics that are covered in the journal. A brief description of “Perceptions of Criminal Responsibility through the Lens of Race” is racial disparity in the criminal justice system and how it affects the outcomes of cases in court (Gamache et.al, 2021). On the surface of this article, I did not see how it is related to forensic psychology but after deeper thought and reflection I realized the decision-making in racial disparity has a role in psychology as it is related to the social aspect of human behavior. The article “Cheese It, It’s the Fuzz: Testing the Belief That Guilt Predicts Police Avoidance” discusses the purpose of the fourth amendment and how it pertains to lawful searches and seizures and how it affects the role of law enforcement. It further discusses how guilt can create an avoidance to police and what constitutes reasonable suspicion as a person flees from the police based on seeing a uniformed officer.

I would say I was surprised by the broader topics of forensic psychology that this journal covers. As I learn more about forensic psychology, I gain knowledge of how it pertains to diversity, social organization, and police legitimacy as listed above. Each of the topics that this journal covers creates a reason to dive deeper into forensic psychology and gain more knowledge. According to the topics and the research within the articles this journal is aligned with my career objectives. My main objective is to work in investigative and police psychology and these topics cover investigative practices and how they intersect with psychology.

  • ASSESSING AND DIAGNOSING PATIENTS WITH MOOD DISORDERS

Accurately diagnosing depressive disorders can be challenging given their periodic and, at times, cyclic nature. Some of these disorders occur in response to stressors and, depending on the cultural history of the client, may affect their decision to seek treatment. Bipolar disorders can also be difficult to properly diagnose. While clients with a bipolar or related disorder will likely have to contend with the disorder indefinitely, many find that the use of medication and evidence-based treatments have favorable outcomes.

Complete and submit your Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation, including your differential diagnosis and critical-thinking process to formulate a primary diagnosis. Incorporate the following into your responses in the template:

    • Subjective: What details did the patient provide regarding their chief complaint and symptomology to derive your differential diagnosis? What is the duration and severity of their symptoms? How are their symptoms impacting their functioning in life?
    • Objective: What observations did you make during the psychiatric assessment?
    • Assessment: Discuss the patient’s mental status examination results. What were your differential diagnoses? Provide a minimum of three possible diagnoses with supporting evidence, listed in order from highest priority to lowest priority. Compare the DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria for each differential diagnosis and explain what DSM-5 criteria rules out the differential diagnosis to find an accurate diagnosis. Explain the critical-thinking process that led you to the primary diagnosis you selected. Include pertinent positives and pertinent negatives for the specific patient case.
    • Reflection notes: What would you do differently with this client if you could conduct the session over? Also include in your reflection a discussion related to legal/ethical considerations (demonstrate critical thinking beyond confidentiality and consent for treatment!), health promotion and disease prevention taking into consideration patient factors (such as age, ethnic group, etc.), PMH, and other risk factors (e.g., socioeconomic, cultural background, etc.).

When looking at the psychology journals, the Journal of Forensic Psychology Research and Practice. The Journal of Forensic Psychology covers numerous academic fields: Research and Practice, including clinical psychology, law, criminology, sociology, forensic psychology, counseling psychology, and sociology. Promoting justice and social change gives forensic psychology practitioners a place to debate recent developments and research, fosters the original study, and critically examines new information (Taylor & Francis Online, n.d.).

An article titled Coherence in Children’s Reports of Sexual Abuse: Age, PTSD, and Questioning Style by Miragoli et al. (2019). The article covers an analysis of 82 child witness depositions, which revealed that age and narrative coherence were positively correlated, but age and post-traumatic symptomatology were negatively correlated. Coherence was affected more favorably by free invites and closed-ended questions than by open-ended ones. Understanding these factors is essential to enhancing child victims’ safety and assistance (Miragoli et al., 2019).

Victimology is a rapidly expanding field of study that combines sociology, criminology, psychology, and criminal justice to investigate the reasons behind crime. The majority of the data used in Victimology comes from the National Crime Victimization Survey, with a focus on nonheterosexual people, children, women, the elderly, immigrants, and victims of violent crimes (Troshynski, 2022). As a future forensic psychologist, I plan to focus primarily on Victimology, and the journal I looked at showed a lot of articles surrounding Victimology. Learning about these things allows you to see what you could enter or see within the field.
