I. Read through your introduction and answer the following questions:
Does your introduction name one specific UN SDG?
Pointer: If it doesn’t, it should! And you should focus on only one SDG.
Does your introduction tell a specific story that connects the SDG to a single neighborhood or community?
Pointer: If it doesn’t, it should! You should narrow your focus down to a specific location and a specific group.
Does your thesis statement explain the following: what the problem is; how the problem affects the people/location; the root cause of that problem; the broader consequences of the problem?
Pointer: Your thesis statement should cover those topics. You can use more than one sentence (up to 3 sentences!) to explain your argument.
II. Read through the topic sentences you have for each paragraph and answer the following questions:
Does each topic sentence merely explain the situation or do they supply an arguable claim?
Pointer: It should be an argument, and not just a statement of facts or data. You can improve the argumentation of your topic sentences by making sure that they communicate ideas that require data and stats as evidence. Claims might also draw non-evident connections between issues. No matter what, the topic sentences should all make sub-arguments in support of your thesis statement.
For each topic tackled by your paragraphs, do they cover the following: metrics specific to your chosen SDG challenge and the attempts to solve it; the role businesses play in causing or improving the problem; past attempts that have been made to solve the problem and why it’s still a problem; how key stakeholders (and who they are) are affected by the problem; and what business opportunities there are to explore in order to solve the problem?
Pointer: Your paper should cover all of the above topics. But you can unpack them in any order that suits your specific argument. You should pay attention to how you organize the topics of your paper so that they are all supporting your thesis statement.
Pointer: Each of the above topics should be backed up by substantial evidence, data, and statistics.
III. Look through your body paragraphs and answer the following questions:
Is every claim backed up by enough evidence, data, statistics?
Pointer: Every claim should be backed up by evidence! And every piece of evidence, data, or statistics should be correctly cited by relevant sources.
Does every paragraph have a so what sentence (or two) at the end that explains either what the overall significance of the paragraph’s particular claim is or how the paragraph supports the paper’s thesis statement (or both)?
Pointer: When in doubt, you should literally write a sentence at the end of each paragraph that says something like, “This [idea, issue, piece of evidence] is significant because…”
IV. Read through your conclusion and essay title and answer the following questions:
Does your conclusion restate your thesis statement with new insight?
Pointer: You should not copy and paste your thesis statement from the introduction into the conclusion. Instead, you should explain in greater detail and with more nuance how your thesis statement has evolved from the introduction. You’ve done a lot of work in every body paragraph: What have you learned? What additional insight can you now add to the original articulation of the thesis statement?
Do you have a title that begins your paper’s argument?
Pointer: Your title is where your argument begins! Don’t call it “Paper 2.” Spend some time thinking about what an effective title looks like in order to capture the core idea of the problem you are focusing on and why it is significant.
