Assignment
You are a consultant (Internal or External) advising a company (sourced from Glassdoor, Indeed, LinkedIn or a company that you work in etc.) how Human Resource Management (HRM) can support and provide a competitive advantage for the business. The key requirement is that you recommend a HRM approach to the organisation which is appropriate to the competitive strategy that the firm is pursuing. HR is bananas
You are required to do an individual 2,500-word academic style essay on an organisation of your choice, or a case study provided during class. You are also required to provide an email to the relevant stakeholders outlining your recommendations.
In addition to the academic essay you are to design and provide a job description (job of your choice), a Data Analysis Table (including WIP) and a Study Mind Map.
Considerations
- Advise management of a competitive HRM strategy for the organisation that considers the environment in which it operates and that of its competitors.
- Consider the key organisational characteristics and HRM practices / policies that are likely to support its business strategy.

Job Description – 5%
- You are to design a job description of your choice relevant to your current organisation or a company of your choosing. It is recommended that you review publicly available recruitment sites such as Public Jobs, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, company websites etc. for examples of job roles. Recommend that the company aim, mission, values, required and desired skills, attributes are included in the job description. How to design a job description will be discussed in class. There is no word limitation for this element of the assignment. AI may be used to generate ideas for this section. if used AI must be referenced and the description should be modified to the company requirements – Note AI use. A reflection point for the Data Table could include observations of current job roles and AI similarity.
Data Analysis and Collection Table – 40%
- The data table is key (foundation) to the essay and other elements of the assignment, therefore all elements should have good linkage and a logical flow of material presented. Students are to explain the rationale of the source material and the reason for the table as a whole is to show understanding of the reliability, validity of sources, and of course the “why” the sources are important for your assignment.
- The Work-in-Progress (WIP) section is to show your learnings from each class / lecture, your own readings and shows evidence of reflective learning and practice. Students can use hand-written notes from learnings, photos of work ideas, you can use bullet-points in the table etc. Materials can include journal articles used or read as part of the module, podcasts, Social media such as LinkedIn posts, evidence of assignment ideas, etc. The reason for the “Why” of the sources is to show how you have decided the value of the sources that you have selected (not all, but the important sources), poor sources will lead to a weak assignment, and weak arguments. Examples will be provided in-class.
- Students may be requested to show evidence of review of materials and the resources that they have used for the assignment during the module to indicate that the resources have been accessed. WIP must include elements discussed in tutorials/lectures such as course materials etc.
- References must be made to current and meaningful literature. Literature referenced must be valid and reliable. That includes books, academic journals, published papers, newspapers (Irish Times, RTE, BBC etc. and magazines. Websites and blogs are not considered valid and reliable sources and are therefore not acceptable sources for this assignment. However, in certain circumstances websites can be referenced. For example, if the information that is being referenced is specific to the organisation e.g. product information, company statistics etc., or it is the website of a professional body such as Irish Management Institute (imi.ie), CIPD etc.
- Sources in the table should be a sample of books journals used. See the presentation titled data-table and evidence-based decision making for examples.

- The table below must be included and all elements included in the assignment. It is recommended that the table is included before the bibliography.

Assignment Format and General Requirements for Students
- The CA will be discussed during tutorials/lectures. All elements of the assignment must be included, if all element are not included the assignment may be marked down as incomplete or returned to the student. All queries and questions regarding the assignment and the various element will be answered in the tutorials/lectures only, response to email may not be possible.
- Any requests for adjournments, time extensions must go through the Programme Co-ordinator. The lecturer cannot not grant adjournment and time extensions.
- Assignment should be word processed applying the following format: font: Size 12; 1.5 Line spacing.
- Students must write their name, student number, programme and module title at the beginning of the assignment itself, along with the project title, word count, plagiarism declaration – note AI declaration on Moodle page, and a bibliography.
- The Email/Assignment must be submitted through Moodle and Turn-it-in only. No hard copy submission is required. No marks will be released to the student until the assignment is submitted through turn-it-in, penalties will apply for late submission. Students should run their assignment through Turnitin prior to final submission to check content.
- Assignment essay must be in academic essay style.
- Tables may be used but they should only contain supporting information e.g. to provide a breakdown or further detail on content that is being discussed in your answer (note data table).
- Do not use images, graphics etc in emails, reports, essays as marks will not be gained if used. Appendices supporting the essay are not required in this CA.
- Do not recommend copying and pasting quotes, references, journals, books, bibliography references etc. as this may impact similarly, AI detection reports etc. Exception is use of direct website links and when accessed.
- Bullet point styles should not be used in an academic essay. Bullet points present facts and inhibit discussion and marks will be deducted for the same.
- This assignment requires the student to demonstrate their ability to think critically. Therefore, the essay is expected to contain arguments for and against the points being made and good discussion demonstrating the students understanding of the subject matter.
- Suggested Layout: 1) Cover Page, 2) AI Declaration with AI Email, 3) Email, 4) Essay 5) Mind-Map 6) Job Description 7) Data Table 8) Bibliography.
Your essay must be fully referenced, identifying all sources of information used in the Bibliography. A variety of academic sources should be used. The Harvard Referencing Style must be applied, and this is mandatory. Bibliographies must be presented in full detail, in alphabetical order, and should only contain works referenced in the text. Do not number or use bullet-points in the Billiography. Failure to comply with these instructions will result in work being either returned unmarked or failed, penalties for late submission will apply until these faults are rectified. Please refer to the library handouts and handbooks (e.g. 1st Cite Guide) for details on the Harvard referencing methods.
