  • Cultural anthropology is the branch of anthropology that deals specifically with human culture.

    Overview

Anthropologists will often conduct research to objectively evaluate cultural practices. Cultural anthropology is the branch of anthropology that deals specifically with human culture. Studying cultural anthropology provides a great amount of insight into other cultures. It can also shed light on and create a deeper understanding and appreciation of one’s own culture. For example, is the culture that you are observing similar to your own culture? If so, you might not even recognize cultural nuances, because they seem “normal” to you. On the other hand, if you see behavior or hear language and slang that you do not recognize, it is likely because the culture differs from your own.

In this course, you were introduced to cultural anthropology and the anthropological concepts that are used to study and understand people, their culture, and their behavior. In the final project film study, you will have the chance to become a cultural anthropologist. The film study is your opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of what culture is, the role it plays in people’s lives, as well as how it influences behavior. In order to do so, you will need to recognize and describe the culture portrayed in the film and discuss cultural values and norms that you observe. You will use anthropological concepts to analyze and explain the behavior of characters, or conflict between the characters, in your chosen film. You will also compare the cultures represented in the film to your own culture.

Select one film from the approved film list. You may select a different film with instructor approval.

Select three of the following anthropological core concepts to discuss in your film study:

    • Acculturation
    • Assimilation
    • Cultural Symbols/Symbolism
    • Enculturation
    • Ethnocentrism
    • Gender
    • Globalization
    • Kinship
    • Marriage
    • Modernization
    • Political Systems/Power
    • Religion/Systems of Belief
    • Rites of Passage

The project is divided into three milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules Two, Four, and Five. The final product will be submitted in Module Seven.

In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:

    • Articulate observations about the role of culture in human societies for how it influences the human condition
    • Utilize basic anthropological concepts in explaining the beliefs, practices, and cultural norms of different cultures
    • Apply basic practices of cultural anthropologists for interpreting interactions between individuals or groups
    • Utilize the basic principles of cultural relativism when observing and interpreting other cultures and subcultures

    Prompt

For this film study, imagine that you are a cultural anthropologist. Instead of observing real people in the real world, you will observe the actions and cultural practices of the characters in a chosen film. As you watch the film, pay attention to the cultural values and norms that you observe. You will also choose three anthropological concepts and explore how each concept influences the behavior of the characters. Finally, you will reflect on how this exercise has led you to think more deeply about other cultures, as well as your own. Remember, as a cultural anthropologist, you are an objective observer. Therefore, it is important to use the basic principles of cultural relativism as you write about the cultures and subcultures that you observe in the film.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

    1. Cultural Relativism: Throughout the course you have practiced using cultural relativism. In the entirety of your film study, you must do the following:
      1. Use respectful language throughout the film study when describing your observations of characters’ behaviors and their cultures.
      2. Avoid making judgments about the characters based on your own beliefs or cultural norms.
      3. Remain objective when comparing and contrasting cultures, and avoid saying that one culture is better than another.
    2. Introduction: In this section of your film study, you will introduce the film and the three anthropological concepts that you selected.
      1. Provide the title and a brief synopsis of the film that you chose to examine.
      2. Develop a clear thesis statement that identifies the three anthropological concepts that you chose to examine in the film.
    3. Culture: In this section of your film study, you will address how culture is represented in the film.
      1. Describe two cultures that are represented in the film. You may also concentrate on subcultures here.
      2. Identify the cultural norms and values that you observed for each of those two cultures, and provide examples from the film to support your identification.
      3. Explain the similarities and differences that you observed between these cultures.
      4. Describe a scene in which a cultural difference exists between characters and explain how that cultural difference affected their interaction.
    4. Anthropological Concepts: In this section of your film study, use the three anthropological concepts that you identified in your thesis statement to explain the behavior of the characters in three scenes of the film.
      1. Briefly explain how each of the three anthropological concepts is relevant to film.
      2. Concept One: Explain the influence of your first anthropological concept on a character’s behavior in a specific scene.
      3. Concept Two: Explain the influence of your second anthropological concept on a character’s behavior in a specific scene.
      4. Concept Three: Explain the influence of your third anthropological concept on a character’s behavior in a specific scene.
    5. Application: In this section of your film study, you will think more broadly about using methods of cultural anthropology to understand other cultures and your own culture.
      1. Imagine that you are able to conduct an informal interview with one of the film’s characters, instead of simply observing them. Identify interview questions that you would ask and explain how those questions would help you gain a better understanding of the character’s cultural practices.
      2. Compare your own culture to a culture that is represented in the film. What similarities and differences do you see?
      3. After thinking about these cultural similarities and differences, reflect on how your own culture may have impacted your initial interpretation of the behavior that you observed in the film.
    6. Conclusion: In this section of your film study, you will summarize your findings and explain what you took away for this project.
      1. Explain what this project taught you about the influence of culture on the overall human experience. In other words, how does culture shape who we are?
      2. Explain what applying the three anthropological concepts to the film taught you about how beliefs, practices, and cultural norms shape one’s behavior.
      3. Explain how this project will influence your interpretation of interactions in your own daily life.

    Milestones

    Milestone One: Setting the Stage
In Module Two, you will submit your choice of film and three concepts. While your choice of concepts can change, your film choice cannot change after submitting this assignment. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone One Rubric.

Milestone Two: Cultural Norms and Values in Film
In Module Four, you will submit a description of the cultures and subcultures present in your chosen film as well as identify some of the observed cultural norms that are unique to the cultures and subcultures in your film. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone Two Rubric.

    Milestone Three: Analyzing One Concept
In Module Five, you will submit your analysis of one of the three concepts you plan to use to explain the behavior of a character in one of scenes of your film. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone Three Rubric.

    Final Submission: Anthropological Film Study
In Module Seven, you will submit your final project. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final product. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. This submission will be graded with the Final Project Rubric.

    What to Submit

Your film study should be 4 to 6 pages in length with 12-point Times New Roman font and one-inch margins. Follow the most current APA guidelines to cite your film, the MindEdge resource, and any additional resources.

  • As an IT professional, you may find that particular user issues are beyond your ability to resolve.

As an IT professional, you may find that particular user issues are beyond your ability to resolve. When those moments arise, a user’s level of satisfaction could be in jeopardy. You must be able to navigate the situation and strive to maintain user satisfaction, even if your involvement with their presented issue comes to an end.

For this week’s discussion, imagine that you’re working on a site. While you are at the user’s desk or site, you discover that the request you are trying to solve is beyond your ability to resolve it. When the user submitted the ticket for IT assistance, they expressed that they need the computing issue resolved in order to do their work. The computing issue is preventing the user from using the systems that they need on a daily basis. The user has been very receptive to your troubleshooting efforts, but as you realize that you are unable to resolve the issue, they are beginning to check their watch frequently and have become less engaged in answering your questions. Reflect on what you would or would not do to ensure customer satisfaction and to improve the user experience with IT services.

For your initial post, address the following:

    • What additional steps would you take to ensure that the user/customer is satisfied?
    • How would you communicate this to the user?

In response to two of your peers, address the following:

    • State whether you agree or disagree with the steps in the initial post and provide a rationale.
    • Explain why user satisfaction is an important part of the troubleshooting process.

    RESPONSE 1

    Hey Everyone,

Whenever you are faced with a client who is becoming agitated or uncooperative, handling the situation delicately is crucial to maintaining their trust and satisfaction. Here is how I would approach it:

Firstly, I acknowledge the client’s patience and explain the progress made so far, being honest about the limits of my current knowledge. It is important to set realistic expectations. An example of something I would say is, “Thank you for your patience, Sabrina. I’ve been working hard on this, but it appears this issue is more complex than I initially anticipated.” Next, I make it clear that I am escalating the issue to our senior technical team or someone with more expertise. This transparency reassures the client that their problem is being taken seriously and handled by capable hands. To empathize with the client’s frustration and minimize disruption to their work, I explore temporary solutions. For instance, I might say something like, “I understand how frustrating this must be, especially with it affecting your work. In the meantime, do you have another PC you could use? If not, I will see if we can arrange a temporary solution for you.”

Throughout the process, I ensure regular updates on progress, keeping the client informed of any developments, whether positive or challenging. This ongoing communication is crucial to prevent them from feeling ignored or left in the dark. Once the issue is resolved, I stay with the client while they test the solution to ensure everything is functioning correctly. This hands-on approach helps confirm that their problem has been effectively addressed. Lastly, I follow up a week later with a brief email to check if they are encountering any further issues. This proactive step shows continued support and reinforces our commitment to their satisfaction.

    RESPONSE 2

Q-What additional steps would you take to ensure that the user/customer is satisfied & how would you communicate this to the user?

A- I have had quite a bit of experience in dealing with upset and even irate clients from when I filed federal taxes at Jackson Hewitt. The first thing I would always recommend when dealing with any dissatisfied client in any capacity is to sincerely apologize for not being able to properly assist them and thank them for their patience and understanding with the process/procedure. Then I would inform the client that although I am unable to personally assist them any further that I will do everything in my power to ensure they get the proper assistance with the resolution they are seeking. This includes personally reaching out on their behalf or with them on hold to be able to fully explain the issue and the theoretical roadblock reached rather than sending the client a detailed email of the issue with contact information for the next step to take. Making the client realize that solving their problem and coming up with a solution for all potential client problems is mine & hopefully the company’s biggest priority and that they are more than just an invoice number to be worked on and pushed down the line. Showing true compassion and empathy for their plight usually goes a long way.

Clear and concise communication throughout the entire process is imperative. No matter how miniscule the details may seem it’s the right of the client to know everything dealing with their information or machine. I have had to at times call above my role to a CPA or even contact the IRS directly and place the call on speaker so that I could be the mediary between the average client with little to no knowledge of federal tax laws and the “tax expert”. I am sure the same could be done via three-way call to keep the client in the loop while discussions are being done during an IT escalation. Regardless be sure to make sure before ending the contact that the client is satisfied with the services rendered and that they have no further questions that you could answer.

    REPLY 1:

    Hello Everyone,

Emotional Intelligence (EI) consists of 5 components: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. These components are crucial in understanding and managing emotions, both in oneself and in others. Transformational leadership, on the other hand, is characterized by inspiring and motivating followers to achieve extraordinary outcomes. In my opinion, the relationship between emotional intelligence and transformational leadership lies in how leader with high emotional leadership are better able to understand their own emotions and motivations (Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation) and those of their followers (empathy). The leaders use this understanding to inspire and motivate their teams towards shared goals, while also fostering strong interpersonal relationships (socials skills).

Diving deeper into combining transformational leadership with emotional intelligence: combining transformation leadership with emotional intelligence enhances team effectiveness significantly. Leaders who are emotionally intelligent can connect with their team members on a deeper meaningful level. Really focusing on their needs, motivations, and challenges. This allows leaders to tailor their transformational leadership approach such as setting a compelling vision in a way that resonates with each team member. By leveraging emotional intelligence, leaders can build trust, loyalty and commitment among team members, thereby improving collaboration creativity and overall team performance.

Thank you for reading my post,

    Albert Keam

    REPLY 2:

Analyze the five components of emotional intelligence and their relationship to transformational leadership.

Emotional intelligence (EI) encompasses five key components: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. These components are crucial in transformational leadership, a style that inspires and motivates followers to achieve exceptional performance. Transformational leaders exhibit visionary thinking, charisma, individualized consideration, and intellectual stimulation, aligning closely with EI traits.

Discuss how to combine transformational leadership with emotional intelligence to improve a situation involving teams at work.

Combining transformational leadership with emotional intelligence enhances team dynamics significantly. Leaders who are emotionally intelligent are adept at understanding their own emotions (self-awareness) and regulating them effectively (self-regulation), fostering a stable and supportive work environment. They are also empathetic, which allows them to understand and respond to the emotions of their team members, promoting trust and collaboration. Motivation, another EI component, enables leaders to inspire and energize their teams towards shared goals, a hallmark of transformational leadership.

Share the difference between transactional, situational, and transformational leadership and the usefulness of each to impact team performance.

Transactional, situational, and transformational leadership styles each offer distinct approaches to influencing team performance. Transactional leaders focus on rewards and punishments, ensuring tasks are completed according to established standards. Situational leaders adapt their style to fit varying circumstances and the maturity of their team members. Transformational leaders, however, empower and inspire their teams through shared vision and values, promoting innovation and growth(Kotamena et al.,2020).

Examine how you see these leadership styles impacting the ethics where you work.

Ethically, these leadership styles impact the workplace differently. Transactional leadership can sometimes lead to a compliance-driven culture, whereas situational leadership fosters adaptability but may lack consistency. Transformational leadership, by emphasizing shared values and motivation, tends to promote a more ethical environment where decisions are aligned with the organization’s mission and values, enhancing long-term sustainability and employee well-being.

In conclusion, combining transformational leadership with emotional intelligence cultivates a positive team culture and enhances overall performance by fostering trust, motivation, and ethical decision-making. Each leadership style contributes uniquely to team dynamics and organizational ethics, with transformational leadership supported by emotional intelligence offering a robust framework for achieving sustainable success.

     REPLY TO:

According to Northouse (2021), there are two types of behaviors: directive and supportive. “Directive behaviors help individuals and group members accomplish goals by giving directions, establishing goals and methods of evaluation, setting timelines, defining roles, and showing how the goals are to be achieved. Supportive behaviors help individuals and group members feel comfortable about themselves, their coworkers, and the situation.” There are four distinct leadership styles depending on the need of the employee; many times, all four styles are used simultaneously. In the first style Directing, the employee is eager to work and please but lacks the knowledge of the work at hand. Education is key at this stage, and the highest amount of time is spent orienting to expectations of the job requirements. In the second style Coaching, the employee has some knowledge of the job requirements but the commitment level is lower than the first style employee as they lose some of their self-confidence with new responsibilities. In the third style Supporting, the employee already has a strong set of skills and has autonomy to make decisions in the workplace. The fourth style Delegating, employees are deemed experts in their areas of work and the leader gives them full control of all decisions. Using these four styles of leadership will assist me in maintaining high performing employees. It is my intention to meet with each person every six months to discuss progress individually and set goals for the incoming six months. Any person not meeting these goals will be provided with extra education and placed on a performance improvement plan to facilitate the key skills needed for the current and future goals.

    REPLY 2

Review the Situational Leadership 2 approach.

Different situations will need different leadership. Situational leadership recognizes that each individual or situation needs a different approach from the leader. There are four distinct leadership categories of directive and supportive leadership (Northouse, 2021). These four categories are: directive (high directive- low supportive), coaching (high directive- high supportive), supporting (high supportive-low directive) and delegating (low supportive- low directive style). The behaviors and direction of the leader and the team will adjust as the needs change.

Explain how and when you would use directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating leadership styles to create high performing leadership teams for your organization.

Directive leadership is best suited for situations where the team needs to clearly understand the goal and how to get there. The leader will provide the most direction and the most oversite.

Coaching leadership is best suited for situations where the team still needs direction of the goals but the leader is able to provide encouragement to the team and work toward their social needs.

Supporting leadership is best suited for situations where the team understands the goals and the leader is able to use supportive actions to help the team find their best skills.

Delegating leadership is best suited for situations where the leader provides the least amount of input and support. This is best suited for teams where team members understand their goals and have the skills needed to get there. These team members generally will have had time and support in the past from other leaders.

    Private or Mercenary Armies

In an age where cyber warfare is more common than the physical battlefield, it may be necessary for the private sector to stop playing defense and go on offense, Gen. Michael Hayden said on August 1, 2011. Hayden, who led the National Security Administration and Central Intelligence Agency under president George W. Bush, said during a panel discussion at the Aspen Security Forum in Aspen, Colo. that the federal government may not be the sole defender of private sector companies—and that there is precedent for such action. “We may come to a point where defense is more actively and aggressively defined even for the private sector and what is permitted there is something that we would never let the private sector do in physical space,” he said. “Let me really throw out a bumper sticker for you: how about a digital Blackwater?” he asked. “I mean, we have privatized certain defense activities, even in physical space, and now you have got a new domain in which we donot have any paths trampled down in the forest in terms of what it is we expect the government—or will allow the government—to do”. Blackwater is a private military contractor that has changed its name to Academi after incidents in Iraq gave them a negative image. If companies decide to hire forces (hackers) to strike back or conduct recovery operations it could change the cyberspace battlefield dramatically (Winterfield and Andress, 2013).
