    Hello Classmates,

Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech reflects leading through hard times while providing a defining vision for followers by supporting black workers over discriminatory and unsafe conditions during a time of violence and racism. In this time of injustice, Martin Luther King Jr. talks to his followers about biblical stories of Hebrews and walks them through tough situations. He urges nonviolent protest because he believes black people are not interested in negative protest and arguments. These instances of window breaking should not be their priority. He explained he had vision to his followers. “And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!” (King 1968). This was a vision that explained they should stay together because unity helps create a collective voice against injustice.

The conditions were harsh at the time and negatively impacted King’s leadership ability. People were suffering and starving from poor working conditions. In addition, protestors have been sprayed by water hoses. Those who remained after the crowd dispersion were arrested. These conditions injected fear, uncertainty, and doubt into his followers and made it more difficult for Martin Luther King Jr. to lead them.

Current leaders could take some directions from the speech to address the present and the future success of a strategy, movement, vision or the success of an organization. One takeaway is to always stand firm with a clear vision. As long as the team has a clear vision for an organization, they will know their current actions have purpose. Another takeaway is to remain calm in front of fear and inspire the team. Like King during his speech, having a leader who is unafraid will help the team remain confident during tough times. The head of the spear needs to stay sharp and lead the way, uninterrupted by outside forces. One last takeaway from King’s speech is to urge for a nonviolent method. This maintains ethics and leadership within the team. Having morals is important for leaders because it separates those who prioritize self-interest and those who prioritize utilitarianism. The best solution for a member may not be the best solution for the whole organization.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” is a powerful example of leading through tough times and inspiring people with a clear vision. He addressed the struggles of African Americans, especially the Memphis sanitation workers, and called for boycotts against businesses that did not support workers’ rights. Despite facing violent opposition, economic hardship, and internal divisions within the Civil Rights Movement, he emphasized unity and nonviolence. The speech reflects his ability to provide hope and direction during challenging times. He recognized the immediate struggles while inspiring his audience to envision a brighter future. Significant resistance to the Civil Rights Movement existed, including violent opposition from institutional forces and individuals against racial equality. Despite these challenges, Dr. King remained steadfast, using his platform to call for unity and perseverance.

Today’s leaders can draw several lessons from Dr. King’s speech to address challenges. Leaders should clearly communicate their vision and the steps needed to achieve it, much like Dr. King’s focus on economic justice and nonviolent protest. Emphasizing the power of collective action can move followers toward a common goal, as seen in Dr. King’s call for boycotts that united the community in a shared cause. Balancing the immediate concerns of followers while keeping sight of long-term objectives is important, and demonstrating courage and resolve in the face of opposition can inspire and strengthen followers’ commitment to the cause. His ability to lead through difficult times by providing a defining vision continues to offer good insights for leaders striving to effect change and guide their organizations toward success.

Exploring Alternative and Complementary Medicine for Chronic Illnesses

Over the past few years, there has been a rapid rise in the public’s interest in using complementary and alternative medicine to treat diseases, including chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and hypertension. Although conventional Western medical or allopathic system continues to be dominant, holistic and integrative therapy systems, have also emerged into the limelight for their ability to provide adjunct and complementary treatments. This discussion post will assess the safety and efficacy of the mentioned approaches and discuss possible complications or issues when working with patients who opt for holistic or allopathic treatment systems.

Especially with regards to the care of cancer, there has been a significant amount of focus on the aspects of treatment that involve the use of such therapies. In no way should complementary therapy be a substitute for standard therapies such as Chemotherapy, Radiation, and surgeries, But certain Complementary therapies are effective in enhancing the quality of life and controlling side effects (Zhang et al., 2021). For example, some research indicates that acupuncture can relieve nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. In contrast, mind-body practices, such as meditation and yoga, can help cancer patients manage their stress and anxiety.

For instance, complementary treatments can be quite helpful when used in combination with the standard therapies for diabetes to achieve good control of blood sugar and avoid complications. Several plants, including bitter melon and fenugreek, have shown evidence of reducing blood glucose levels, but further research is still needed to show that they are safe and effective. Further, measures such as physical activity and diet, including fiber and whole grains, can complement the allopathic medications for diabetes management.

For hypertensive patients, other therapies, including stress management strategies, daily exercise, and dietary changes, are useful in supplementing conventional pharmacological treatment (Verma et al., 2021). Garlic, fish oil, and hawthorn are natural supplements that effectively reduce blood pressure. However, it is recommended to seek doctors’ permission to use products because they may interfere with other medications.

It is also important not to dismiss alternative and complementary therapies completely, as they may have some benefits and should be used with the appropriate precautions and recommendations of healthcare providers. Certain nontraditional therapies may interact with traditional medication or may possess secondary effects, especially when they are administered without the guidance of a doctor. Further, it is vital to guarantee that an adjunct strategy is evidence-based instead of relying on word-of-mouth information.

In conclusion, the choice between holistic and allopathic approaches should be made with the help of healthcare providers, depending on the specific conditions, preferences, and outcomes of the scientific research. Some people may be concerned about the safety or efficacy of some of these alternatives or complementaries. However, going into these treatments with an evidence-based mindset is always wise. The discussion has provided insight into how health care professionals should listen to the patients, respect their decisions regarding the kind of treatment they would like to seek, and, in turn, help them in their quest for better health regardless of the type of treatment they are willing to undergo.

  • Earlier detection of illnesses such as cancer in patients can successfully be treated resulting in no signs of cancer detected again.

Reply to student posts with a reflection of their response.  Please provide citations and references (in APA, 7th ed. format) for your work.

Earlier detection of illnesses such as cancer in patients can successfully be treated resulting in no signs of cancer detected again. The type of treatment administered to a patient with cancer depends on how advanced the disease is and the type of cancer. Additionally, diabetes and hypertension are also managed through drugs given to patients by doctors (Prasanth et al, 2023). However, these specific illnesses can also be treated using the approach of alternative medicine and it can only be applied by doctors after careful analysis of the advantages and disadvantages to an individual.

Alternative and complementary medicine refers to using various individual practices as a substitute for Western medication. These practices include; meditation, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and special diets (Cronkleton, 2023). The safety and effectiveness of alternative and complementary medicine to treat cancer using herbal medication is a concern to some people as to whether it can interrelate with cancer medicines.

Some herbal medications administered to patients with diabetes can interact with medication prescribed by a doctor leading to safety dangers. The effectiveness of alternative medicine for patients with diabetes is one that reduces stress and helps in managing blood sugar levels, this can be achieved through the use of meditation and stress reduction methods.  The use of alternative medicine like acupuncture is safe but it can pose a safety risk to blood pressure tablets (Cronkleton, 2023). Alternative practices like meditation and techniques that relax individuals to treat hypertension help in controlling stress and regulating blood pressure levels in patients.

Holistic care involves the physical, psychological, and emotional treatment of individuals. This care is associated with alternative and complementary medication. However holistic care may pose safety and effectiveness risks especially when there is an interaction with conventional medication (Prasanth et al, 2023).  Allopathic care on the other hand refers to the use of Western approaches such as chemotherapy, surgery, and administration of drugs to patients with hypertension and diabetes. However, allopathic care may sometimes undermine the effectiveness of holistic care and complementary medicine.

Healthcare workers need to respect the approaches patients take to treat their illnesses. When supporting a patient who chooses holistic or allopathic medicine, healthcare workers should provide information to patients on the safety and effectiveness of treatment approaches available (Cronkleton, 2023). Healthcare workers should also have a dialogue with their patients concerning the medications to be used. Additionally, healthcare workers should respect the patient’s decisions that align with their beliefs and values and have a mutual agreement on the type of medication to be administered.

  • Strong working knowledge of the differences between an IFSP, IEP, and 504 Plans is important for teachers working with children from birth through age 8.

Strong working knowledge of the differences between an IFSP, IEP, and 504 Plans is important for teachers working with children from birth through age 8. During this time, students often transition from one type of plan to another as they age, grow, develop and as more data and information about a specific disability category or diagnosis is obtained. Knowing when and how to develop and implement each type of plan is important to ensure the individual needs of each child are met according to the legal guidelines.

    Part 1: Scenarios

Write three scenarios, one for IFSP, one for IEP, and one for a 504 Plan. Each scenario should be no more than 250 words and should describe when each of the three types of service plans would be most appropriate. Include specific student details, types of data that would be collected, timelines for implementation, and all stakeholders that would be involved in the process for each scenario.

    Part 2: In-Service Digital Presentation

Imagine you have been tasked with creating in-service training about the three types of student service plans for an audience of school administrators, general education teachers, school counselors, and paraprofessionals. Create a 12-15 slide digital presentation outlining the purpose and best scenario for the use of an IFSP, IEP, and 504 Plan. The presentation should utilize the Part 1 Scenarios and address the following:

    • Explanation of the characteristics of each type of plan and when it is most appropriate for use, including a specific example for each.
    • Description of what law applies to each plan, including the name of the legislation.
    • Summary of who is eligible for each plan.
    • Explanation of who creates the plan and the individuals responsible for implementing the plan.
    • How each type of plan supports student needs.
    • Describe the overlaps and transitions that can occur in the application of IFSPs, IEPs, and 504 Plans and provide an example to illustrate your ideas.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition known for challenges in social communication and interaction, as well as repetitive behaviors or fixations. As per the American Psychiatric Association (2013), individuals with ASD might struggle with understanding social cues, engaging in conversations, and forming relationships(Murphy, 2018). Additionally, they may engage in repetitive actions, show resistance to change, and have intense fixations on specific topics of interest.

Individuals on the autism spectrum, as per research findings, face an elevated risk of involvement in criminal acts. It is crucial to clarify that this inclination is not inherent to their condition (Allen et al., 2008; Schwartz-Watts, 2005). Various factors contribute to this increased vulnerability. Firstly, challenges in social interactions and misinterpreting others’ motives may inadvertently lead individuals with autism to violate laws or be coerced by others. Secondly, their fixation on specific interests can intensify to a point where it drives them towards illegal actions, such as attempting to access related items unlawfully. Lastly, struggles with adaptability and handling changes might trigger aggressive behaviors when their routines are disrupted.

In the field of forensic psychology, it is essential for psychologists to carefully assess the potential presence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in defendants or individuals involved in legal matters. Firstly, ASD symptoms can affect their comprehension of rights, ability to provide accurate statements, or actively engage in their legal defense(Murphy, 2018). Secondly, without suitable adjustments, legal processes may heighten stress and anxiety, potentially magnifying ASD symptoms. Lastly, when determining sentencing or interventions, recognizing the influence of ASD on criminal behavior can guide the choice of appropriate actions, like tailored treatment programs.

In conclusion, although ASD does not directly cause criminal behavior, certain symptoms can heighten the risk of engaging in unlawful activities. Forensic psychologists need to be mindful of these factors to ensure equity in evaluation and intervention approaches.

    Post one:

    Hello Class,

This week, we learn about Neurodevelopmental Disorders. I wanted to look more into autism spectrum disorder. With autism spectrum disorder on my side of the family, and out of 9 grandkids that my mom has, we have two that are borderline and one that is full-blown autistic. This is a disorder that I am still learning to this day.

“Neurodevelopmental disorder is a group of conditions with onset in the developmental period.” (DSM-5). This disorder goes hand in hand with other disorders. So, like someone with autism, they may often have an intellectual developmental disorder. Neurodevelopmental disorders can also co-occur with different mental and behavioral disorders. This disorder “varies from specific limitations of learning or control of executive functions to global impairments of social skills or intellectual ability” (DSM-5).

In the case study of Dominic, who is 59 years old, it is said that he has a neurodevelopmental disorder. This could contribute to criminal behavior because Dominic will talk, he will make inappropriate jokes, and sometimes he will consume pornography. If when he speaks, it is unacceptable, then someone might take it the wrong way, not knowing that he has a disorder. There is no established cause of the association between brain pathology and violent behavior.

Autism spectrum disorder is a language impairment. Now, like the two kids in our family that have this, they can talk, hang out with their friends, etc. The kid with it fully can’t speak; he holds his head from the side. We found out he had this when he was about one year old. He is so intelligent that he could swim in a pool 12 feet deep without safety by the time he was one. Yes, we would be in the pool with him. He would swim underwater and dive off the diving board. He teaches us something new every day.

Forensic psychiatry will provide treatment for the person who has severe mental disorders. “Early studies did suggest co-occurring conditions in a large sample, n=394 in mentally ill offenders that do have ASD” (PMC).
