CONDUCT ONLINE RESEARCH ON ONE OF THE CONVERSATIONS YOU IDENTIFIED TO NARROW TO A SPECIFIC AND UNRESOLVED ISSUE (WHILE KEEPING TRACK OF THE SITES YOU VISIT AND WHAT YOU LEARN FROM THOSE SITES) AND WORK TO DEVELOP A PRELIMINARY RESEARCH QUESTION THAT IS BOTH ARGUABLE AND COMPLEX.

    For completion:

    1. Locate three (3) informative sources related to a topic in your discpline/field you found earlier and would be interested in studying further.
      • Copy/paste link to Source 1
        • one interesting tidbit from this source that meaningfully helps you develop your understanding of the topic

      • Copy/paste link to Source 3
        • one interesting tidbit from this source that meaningfully helps you develop your understanding of the topic
    2. Finally, write a preliminary research question.
      • That is: now that you’ve identified a topic and briefly read some informative discourse about it, what question do you have or want to use to guide further research? It is okay if your preliminary question is relatively broad, but make sure you pay attention to how writers in your sources are informing and asking their questions to help model your own
        • Try and incorporate some key terms/phrases/concepts into your preliminary question to begin narrowing potential lines of inquiry

describe your discipline’s discursive practices (based on what you already know and on what you have since learned), pose questions you have about information dissemination, and investigate the outline of your discipline to identify two sub-disciplines in which you are interested. Compose thoughtful (and numbered) responses to the following:

    1. Reflect on what you learned about disciplines as discourse communities from THINKING THROUGH THE DISCIPLINES and on what you learned about your particular discipline’s research and writing practices from the READING AND WRITING ABOUT… chapter(s) you chose. Then, reflect on how the information in either reading complemented or challenged what you already knew about your discipline’s practices and/or the underlying disciplinary values that support these practices.

    2. Reflect on what you learned from the UNDERSTANDING INFORMATION DISSEMINATION (ARTICLES < JOURNALS < ACADEMIC PUBLISHING HOUSES) AND INFORMATION ACCESS (DATABASES AND SUBJECT GUIDES) instructional page and list questions you have about the content presented.

    3. Scroll through the OUTLINE OF ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES to find your discipline, review the associated sub-disciplines listed beneath, and click on the sub-disciplines in which you are interested to read more about those particular areas. Once you have thoroughly explored all sub-disciplines in which you are interested, identify two that you would like to explore further through your work in this class, provide links (click on the Insert Link icon; CTRL/CMD + K) for their respective pages, and discuss what you learned from reading these pages that prompted and/or reaffirmed your interest.

    Concepts, Posters, and Marketing

Death of a Salesman poster with a man walking away with two cases.black and white show poster for Equus with an abstract picture of a horse. The Music Man image with a cartoon man holding a trumpet and woman in green outfit next to him.

There are visual examples of creative poster art for three plays: Death of a SalesmanEquusThe Music Man. You can get a glimpse of a play or musical through the image and use of color. Depending on the images one uses, an emotional response or attention can draw an audience in and make them curious.  Does the first image of what appears to be a downtrodden man with suitcases make you wonder about his life?

Poster art and descriptive text are often the first introductions to the play.

How can we, as artists, go further with the playwright’s “blueprint” of the play?

Now that you have read the play, Clybourne Park By Bruce Norris I’m sure you have an overall vision in your mind of what certain scenes might reflect. In this assignment, you will not design the scenery, lights, and sound,  but rather communicate some overall themes and images so the designers can collaborate with you and the playwright.

Here at GCC, the Producer (and sometimes the director) takes the lead in giving instructions to the marketing areas to help convey the overall concept and ideas of the play so an audience will be curious about the play (and hopefully attend the production!)

    Instructions

This assignment will put you in the shoes of a producer, director, and marketing team to creatively convey ideas. Have you ever made a “mood board” that gathers some of your favorite themes or ideas in a visual sense? It is very similar. Sometimes the best way to express feelings is through imagery and sound. Here is your chance to give it a “go” and explore:

Option #1 – Create a creative conference design package that you feel best captures the play Clybourne Park By Bruce Norris. As directors collaborate with designers, designers (and provide a concept) they often discuss mood, texture, color, and light within production and design meetings, this assignment will give you a glimpse into that process. This will include concepts for the scenic designer, properties designer, sound designer, costume designer, and lighting designer.

OPTION #2 – CREATE A POSTER WITH A PRIMARY MARKETING IMAGE FOR A FICTIONAL PRODUCTION OF CLYBOURNE PARK.  INCLUDE ALL PERTINENT INFORMATION ALONG WITH AN IMAGE SUPPORTING THE PRODUCTION. THIS WILL BE YOUR OWN CREATION AND INCLUDE AN EXPLANATION/PITCH OF YOUR POSTER FOR THE THEATRE COMPANY.

    Helpful Tips and Suggestions:

Both of these options may warrant  a re-read of the play and researching examples.

Important for Poster Option: If the poster option, do not simply post someone else’s image of a poster – you must create your own. It is suggested you do not go for the obvious (although some do. . .  See what you can do based on your own interpretation and ideas.

Important for Design Board: For the idea board, you can collage imagery, but it must accompany an explanation (as if you were a part of a design meeting).

You may also create Powerpoint Slide or SWAY document if that helps to convey your ideas clearly.

Your boss is unexpectedly meeting with a potential client from a foreign country (you need to select a country that is not in North America) in one hour and does not have time to read a report. Articulate the importance of particular verbal communication preferences for the region ( informal or formal greetings, how to address people in a business setting, the role small talk plays, etc.).

Identify how to conclude a business meeting and how to follow up with the actions.
