    Film Analysis I: Fight Club

                 Although many films address the topic of Freudian psychoanalysis, Fight Club uniquely projects common Freudian themes as “symbols” in its characters and even in the titular organization.  The film is meant to show how two opposing individuals (portrayed by Edward Norton and Brad Pitt) interact antagonistically in their personas, their attitudes, and their behaviors.  These two characters do, however, have a common ground to resolve their differences: fight club. The organization of fight club represents a “battle zone” for two competing wills (Norton as the Narrator and Pitt as Tyler Durden). Moreover, the fight club serves as its own character that results when too much tension arises between the Narrator and Durden.  The film’s director, David Fincher, then foreshadows the idea that the two characters are elements of the same person, whose constant conflict represents common Freudian principles like tension from equilibrium, psychic motivation (id, ego, and superego), conscious defenses mechanisms. Your assignment (if you choose to do so) is to write a persuasive essay that supports this assertion by providing evidence from the film and evidence from the scientific community (i.e., a minimum of two journal articles to support the content of psychoanalysis). You should answer all of the following throughout the paper:

    a.) An introduction that gives an overview of your assertion (i.e., that the film represents Freudian concepts).

    b.) A rationale that explains how tension and strives toward equilibrium are evident.

    c.) A clear characterization of how psychic forces (i.e., id, ego, superego) are represented in the story

Review Chapter 3, “The Nursing Workforce,” of The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity, located in the Topic 2 Resources, and compare the scope of practice and differentiated practice competencies of licensed practical nurses (LPNs), registered nurses (RNs), and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Review “Scope of Nursing Practice” from Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, located in the Topic 2 Resources. Standard 12 of the standards of practice describes the nurse’s role related to education. Explain the role of professional development (life-long learning) in the context of this standard.

    Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least two references cited using APA format.     Read the scenario and address the discussion question:

    Scenario

    Nurse Lope is starting a busy shift in which she was finishing report on Mr. Johnson. During report, Nurse Jim who was finishing his shift also gave Nurse Lope a medicine cup containing three of Mr. Johnson’s unopened medications that he reported were recently retrieved from the medication dispenser. Nurse Lope was told that these were supposed to have been given 30 minutes ago and asked if she could give them during bedside hand-off. As Nurse Lope planned to stay in Mr. Johnson’s room to complete his vital signs and assessment, she agreed with this plan.

    When she opened Mr. Johnson’s electronic medical record to administer these medications, she noticed that these medications were scheduled to be given 3 hours ago. Additionally, one of the medications had a barcode that was not scanning to Mr. Johnson’s chart. Nurse Lope proceeded to administer these medications so that she would not be late on the next round of medications, which included some of the same ones. It was later discovered that the medication that was not scanning was for another patient and should not have been given to Mr. Johnson.

    Discussion Question

    Outline the concept of professional accountability as it pertains to nursing. Examine the actions of Nurse Jim and Nurse Lope. Discuss how you would approach this scenario if you were in Jim’s and Lope’s position. Based on your analysis of how nurses demonstrate accountability in clinical practice, the nursing process, and evidence-based practice, explain how you would handle this situation if you were the nurse manager overseeing Jim and Lope.

    Constructing a useful psychological test is a meticulous process. First, you must formulate a clear, empirically based definition of what is to be measured and carefully consider the items and response formats that would best measure this construct. The test items are created based on a theory or by sampling a domain of knowledge. Subject matter experts are often called upon to generate and evaluate the initial test items. The test is then given to a large sample of people and, after careful analysis, the statistical properties of each item are scrutinized, and decisions are made about item retention, elimination, and revision. You will go through many of the steps in this process in this course. Your first assignment is to identify a construct of interest that you would like your proposed test to measure and start the process of developing a definition of the construct of interest. You should select a construct that is applicable to organizations (e.g., intelligence, personality, integrity).   

    To prepare for this Assignment:

    Read the article, “Constructing Validity: Basic Issues in Objective Scale Development,” the section entitled “Scale Construction” in Methodological Issues & Strategies in Clinical Research, and the section entitled “Defining the Construct” in Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences: Summated Rating Scale Construction.

    As you read the resources, focus on the steps for developing an operational definition of a psychological construct to be measured. Also, consider the importance of conducting a literature review to clearly articulate the definition of a construct and differentiate it from similar constructs.

    Read the chapter, “Taxonomies and Compendia of Cognitive Ability and Personality Constructs and Measures Relevant to Industrial, Work, and Organizational Psychology.” Review cognitive and personality constructs and their associated definitions.

    Identify a psychological construct of interest to you that you would like to focus on throughout the remainder of the course. The construct should be applicable to organizations.
    Conduct a brief literature review on the construct. Develop a working definition of the construct or adopt one based on what you researched and provide justification for it use.   Submit a 1-page paper (not including references) that addresses the following:

    Identify the construct of interest* that you would like to focus on for the remainder of the course.

    Provide an initial draft of an operational definition of the construct. Be sure to include cited evidence from the empirical literature that helped you create an operational definition of this construct.
