Comment on Leaf et al.’s (2021) critique of the RBT® certification. To what extent do you agree with their critiques? You need not agree or disagree with all of their critiques; you may select one or two and comment on those specific critiques.

Leaf et al. (2021) promulgated some pertinent and sensible arguments in their deliberation about the RBT certification. I feel the article has correct and reliable information. However, “Requiring Only a Minimum of 40 Hours of Training” (Leaf et al., 2021) also brings up some conflicting thoughts. In my opinion, this number of training or education hours is enough to let someone understand how to fulfill the role of a behavior technician. In my experience, most skills I developed were practical under the direct oversight of a BCBA. If the BCBA performs well, the RBT’s effectiveness is guaranteed.

How would implementing Leaf et al.’s solutions resolve the issues they addressed? If you work in an RBT role, do you think implementing their solutions would resolve any issues in your own organization?

Leaf et al. (2021) outlined very convincing solutions to the problems they detected in the RBT credentialing process. I believe that this proposed solution is completely suitable for resolving these issues. The solution I envision that harbors the most advantage from my experience as an RBT would be “Use Independent Assessors for Competency-Based Assessments” (Leaf et al., 2021). For my first job, I worked for an organization that encompassed such activities. Through this process, I believe everyone is equally responsible for their lawful duties. The BCBA must guarantee competency, and the RBT must be aware of their role, or this will be seen from the outcome of that autonomous evaluation.

Pick one of the three primary approaches to ethics about which you have learned thus far: virtue ethics, deontology, consequentialism. Using Rosenberg and Schwartz (2019) as a guide, make a case for why behavior analysts’ professional ethics should be based on that approach. What is an issue with this approach?

The fundamental approach to ethics that behavior analysts’ codes of conduct should comply with is deontology. Applying deontology as an ethical decision-making basis guarantee that you have a firm foundation or a set of rules to guide you in making the most ethical choice. It follows, therefore, that the decisions of behavior analysts ought to be consistent (Rosenberg and Schwartz, 2019). The only problem with this method is that there can be no gray area, and some things are subjective. There is no clue what will happen if the view does not align with the options. Besides, there is not even any information about how to solve problems when perception or subjectiveness is involved.

Compare Rosenberg and Schwartz’s (2019) ethical decision-making model to that proposed by Brodhead, Cox, and Quigley (2018). As an aid, pick an ethical scenario you have discussed so far in class. If you apply both models to this scenario, how do they differ and how are they similar? Do they suggest different courses of action?

I believe Rosenberg and Schwartz’s (2019) ethical decision-making model appears to be more detailed and simpler than the Broadband et al. (2018) models, which are also complicated. Regarding ethics, like with everything else, issues of perception and interpretation play a role as well. Nevertheless, while applying both models to a scenario, it seems there is little or no difference in the outcome or information produced from the different models. Consequently, I came to the same result for both models.

Describe one dual relationship you have had. Did this relationship pose an ethical dilemma? Was it unavoidable? How did you navigate this relationship? Apply Brodhead et al.’s (2018) decision-making model to your situation. Looking back on it, should you have handled it differently?

I had a two-fold relationship with my supervising BCBA, my good friend. Ethically, I faced a dilemma during the tenure of that relationship. I believe she was qualified enough for her task, and I trusted her to be sincere and to have my best intentions in mind as she was my supervisor. She used our connection to subtly ask me to do some unethical things. When I understood what was happening, I refused to do some of it anymore, so I quit the job and ended the relationship. She was guilty of violating ethics codes 1.13 (positive and exploitive association) and 2.06 (accuracy) in service reporting and billing. Having learned about the issues, I felt confident I had done the right thing (Brodhead et al., 2018). I am unsure what else could have been done, as she crossed the line in this relationship.
