Field Experience Observation Assignment Instructions
For this assignment, you will be required to observe one student in an instructional setting for two hours. During this observation, you should record all behaviors displayed by the student. Your list should be comprehensive and specific (e.g., pulls his own hair, stares away from the teacher, whispers to her friend, throws pencil on the floor, etc.). This list will help you to remember what you observed when you write the summary and analysis portions of the assignment. Please record exactly what you observe. Avoid vague terms (e.g. aggressive, disengaged, noncompliant) and assumptions about the student’s feelings (e.g. He was angry.). You should only record what you see and you should strive to record your observations as objectively as possible.
Do not use the student’s real name in any part of this assignment. Create a pseudonym for the student to maintain confidentiality.
The first part of the assignment will be the Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) chart. Please review the Field Experience Observation ABC Chart before the observation so that you know what to look for during the observation. The ABC chart should include at least two behavior episodes. When considering the function of the observed behavior for the ABC chart, please choose from one of the following:
Escape/Avoidance
Obtaining/Acquiring
The summary portion of the assignment will begin with a description of the student and the classroom environment. Then you will summarize the behaviors you witnessed during the observation. You will use the list you made during the observation to help you write the summary. The list should not be included in the summary.
For the analysis portion of the assignment, you will provide a few reasons as to why the behaviors might have occurred. Use citations from your textbook to support your reasoning.
The summary and analysis portions of this assignment should be 400-500 words combined. This does not include the words that will be used on the Field Experience Observation ABC Chart. Please copy and paste the Field Experience Observation ABC Chart onto the document that contains the summary and analysis. Use current APA format when writing your summary and analysis.
The preferred observation site would be in a classroom that provides assistance to students with emotional disabilities. The preferred student for this observation would be an individual who has been known to exhibit challenging behaviors. If you are not able to conduct the observation in a classroom setting, you may conduct the observation in a childcare center, extracurricular class, Sunday school, or preschool setting.
The Liberty University Field Office will not help you to find a school/classroom for this observation. You must independently approach observation sites in your community to organize the observation. You may use the Field Experience Observation Letter if your chosen observation site requests additional documentation.
NOTE: If you live in Central Virginia, you may not contact the local school systems (Lynchburg City, Campbell County, Bedford County, Appomattox County, and Amherst County) to complete the field experience requirement. You may contact the instructor of this course for your options. Thank you!
