Minorities hit harder by COVID-19

In March 2020, the world came to a sudden halt when we were hit by a global pandemic, caused by COVID-19. The sudden onset affected many people uniquely; however, minorities saw the biggest effect compared to White Americans. These minorities include the Black community, Native Americans, Pacific Islander and Latinos; even though there are a number of social and economic factors that cause these minorities to be an easy target of COVID-19 the three most concerning are: healthcare access, educational inequality, wealth gaps, and occupation.

Many people from racial and minorities groups are more likely to be uninsured than non-Hispanic whites. This is due to the lack of funding to receive the same healthcare access and quality compared to their white peers, causing higher hospitalization rates and deaths from COVID-19. For example, “Blacks make up 33% of COVID-19 hospitalizations but Black people only make up 18% of the population in New York City,” (Color of Coronavirus). In addition, healthcare access can be limited for these groups due to other factors such as “lack of transportation, childcare, ability to take time off from work, language barriers and historical and current discrimination in the healthcare systems” (Health Equity Considerations). Therefore, the lack of access to quality healthcare has been a prominent factor affecting minorities.

Another concerning factor is the inequity in accessing high-quality education for these racial and ethnic minority groups, which will increase the wealth gap. The ongoing “racial segregation in schools, unequal school resources, unequal academic opportunities and the differential teacher quality and student discipline” add on to the barriers of these minorities because it leads to lower high school completion rates and less likely to receive a higher education (Annie E. Casey). Receiving a higher education will increase their chances of gaining more stable job options and increasing their earnings potential. For instance, “Hispanics and Blacks continued to have lower earnings than Whites; weekly earnings of full-time wage and salary workers in 2018 were $680 for Hispanic men, $694 for Black men and $916 for white men” (Composition of labor). The inequalities in the educational system widen the wealth gap for minority groups, having them to work longer days, receiving no paid sick days, and having a higher probability of contracting COVID-19.

Lastly, many minorities form a major part of the essential work settings such as healthcare facilities, farms, factories, grocery stores and public transportation, causing them to be more exposed to the virus. For example, “With 74 million essential workers, 61% of these workers are at increased risk for severe COVID-19,” essential workers are not given the same benefits as a CEO of a company because they are unable to work from home and most do not have paid sick days (Nearly 74 Million.). Consequently, the essential workers need to make ends meet and cannot afford to miss work, increasing their exposure to the public and increasing their risk to transmit and spread COVID-19 to their families and loved ones.

Although COVID-19 has affected many people, White people have personalized this pandemic, and not realized how this pandemic has only increased the discrimination and disparities many minority groups experience within the country. This pandemic has only shone light on the systemic racism and inequalities within the country for many minorities, as they are more prone to inequalities, especially within the educational, health care, and job sectors. This has increased their economic instability and caused them to spread COVID-19 at higher rates than their White counterparts. This has only added to the list of reason why this country must institute sweeping changes to promote equality amongst different cultural and racial minorities in this country.
