Laboratory # 1 Examination
What is living in your mouth?
In this laboratory test you will examine your mouth microflora by Gram staining.
During Lab
Prepare a teeth/gum sample slide smear by following instruction.
Perform Gram stain on your teeth/gum sample by following instruction.
Examine your slide under the microscope at 100X and pick an area with diverse bacteria.
Take a picture or draw a sketch of the bacteria morphology and arrangement you found in your slide. (This must be included in your report next week)
Label your slide with your sample name (teeth/gum) and initials. Save your slide in the slide box.

Based on the presumptive ID’s which organisms cause periodontal disease and which if any are considered protective for health? (Give at least 3 examples)
Do periodontal disease bacteria cause other diseases? (Give 2 disease examples)
What did this exercise teach you about your oral health? Are you considering any changes in your oral care routine? Why or why not?
