IOM Recommendations

A major IOM report recommendation is utilizing the full potential of nurses’ training and education. Today, the nursing profession has more than three million RNs and up to 200000 APRNs. The potential of nurses to promote health, optimize health, alleviate suffering, and do other activities is rising because they can be found everywhere, including health facilities, clinics, and schools. Some services, such as primary health, including primary and secondary prevention, have increased thanks to the large workforce. The idea that nurses have expanded primary care means it increases access of care to many communities. Nurses are also closer and spend more time with their patients. This could not be possible if the nursing population was constant or did not expand every year. Proximity to patients has also given nurses a chance or opportunity to understand the caring process. They understand patient care and other wellness needs through various models and evidence-based practices (Cross County Staffing, 2013). This has increased the knowledge base and added more value to care. Nurses can also use the new understanding of the care process to provide high-quality care, improve outcomes, and deliver higher levels of satisfaction. The negative side of this new understanding of the care process is that nurses have higher workloads, leading to stress. The burden of responding to the care needs of society mostly falls on nurses or other health workers.

The trend or norm where nurses or health workers meet most of the care needs has led to a workforce shortage. This shortage is expected to increase or become more severe in the future. Elsewhere, lack of diversity is a key challenge in the nursing profession. There is a shortage of male nurses and ethnic minority nurses to address the care needs of specific groups. Increasing ethnic and racial diversity can help reduce health disparities that still exist or face people of color (Wilbur et al., 2020). Another challenge connected to nurses or nursing is that so many of them are not advancing their education to higher levels. This means the portion of RNs pursuing an advanced degree is not as per expectations or care needs.
