- Download the Data Transformation Worksheet and follow the indicated steps to perform data transformations on the provided data set.
- Split the file.
- Select cases (50% random).
- Recode the variable indicated in the worksheet.

Module 3 Data Transformation Worksheet

In this assignment, you will use the SPSS Skills Data Set and SPSS software to practice several data transformation procedures. Begin by downloading the SPSS Skills Data Set (Excel file) to your computer and complete the following steps:
Step 1: Import Data Set
· Open the SPSS software
· Locate the SPSS Skills Data Set in your files
· Click “Open” and then “OK”
If you have correctly imported the Excel file, you will see rows and columns of data displayed in the Data View window.
Step 2: Split File by STROKE
· Select “Data”
· Select “Split File”
· Highlight the variable STROKE
· Select “Organize output by groups”
· Click the arrow to move STROKE to the box
If you have correctly split the file, you will see a shift in the order of cases, now listed by STROKE instead of ID number.
Step 3: Select Cases: 50% Random Sample
· Select “Data”
· Select “Select Cases”
· Select “Random sample of cases”
· Click the “Sample” button
· In the Approximately box, enter “50”
· Click “Continue” and then “OK”
If you have correctly completed this select cases procedure, you will see a random selection of 50% of the cases.
Step 4: Recode RACE Variable
· Select “Transform”
· Select “Recode into Different Variables”
· Highlight the variable “RACE”
· Click the arrow to move RACE to the box
· Under Output Variable, enter the following information:
· Name: RACENUM
· Label: Race number category
· Click “Change:
· Click “Old and New Values”
· Enter old and new values for each RACE category using the following information, then click “Add” to move information to the OldNew box:

· Click “Continue” and then “OK”
If you have correctly recoded the RACE variable, you will see a new column with RACENUM in Data View.
