ENGR5001 PART 1: GROUP RESEARCH PROPOSAL (100 points)
DUE 30/5/25 (End of Semester WEEK 14), BY 12pm (NOON)
Choose a topic that is important to your team. It can NOT be a topic that a team member used for their Assessment 2 introduction/problem statement. It must be a new and different topic.
WHAT TO DO
Write a 1200 wordresearch proposal on your chosen project/topic. The 1200-word count includes in-text citations but excludes the reference list, figure captions, title, keywords, and team names. Please use double-spacing to allow for effective feedback to be written on your submission.
Consider the merits of the project topic/research question before you start.
Is the chosen topic:
- Focused? Relevant? Original?
- Able to be addressed using research methods (NOT a literature review)?
- Feasible to answer within 12-18 months?
- Able to be answered via the proposed research design?

ENGR5001 Format & writing style guidelines:
Format, Structure & Style (20 marks) |
-Formal, consistent scientific writing (no bullet points!) -Appropriate syntax, grammar, punctuation & spelling -Overall structure must be organised, clear, easy to identify and follow your idea development -Paragraphs must build the story and there needs to be a fluid connection in content and tone between each one. -In-text citations and full reference list must be included and in APA 7th format -At least 20 references of peer-reviewed journal articles -1200 word count total, including in-text references but excluding reference list, your team and member names, figure captions, title, and keywords. |
Figures: Figures may be used as appropriate. These MUST be correctly attributed and referenced where the work is not your own. References for figures are included in the reference list at the end, and citations are typically included in the figure captions (figure captions are always required).
ENGR5001 PART 2: GROUP ORAL PRESENTATION (100 points)
DUE IN WORKSHOP SEMESTER WEEK 12 & 13 (MAY 12th- May 23rd)
WHAT TO DO: The Presentation
You will pitch your research proposal as a team during your final workshop in weeks 12 & 13. You MUST be present for both weeks (unless discussed prior) and will be required to provide peer feedback. All team members must contribute to the creation and presentation of this part of the assessment. Format:7-minute oral presentation, in person, using Powerpoint/alternative presentation software of your choosing.
Aim: You will ‘pitch’ your idea to your peers. This is not the place to include everything you possibly can, but to curate your proposal so that your audience is engaged and understands your idea, and is excited by it! Use appropriate visual aids to engage your audience and provide greater understanding, and ensure the audience knows of the purpose and importance of your research.
All figures included must be appropriately cited and referenced.
Include the following in your presentation:
1. Title Page | Include proposal title, team name and team members. |
2. Motivation/background for your research proposal | Use carefully selected literature to highlight the motivation for designing this project, and include any aspects your audience must know to understand your topic. |
3. Aims of the project | State aims briefly & hypothesis if appropriate. |
4. Significance of the project | Explain why this is a significant project, what the benefits may be, and who might benefit from the outcomes |
5. Research Design | Experimental design & controls; variables; limitations. |
6. Research Methods | Include data gathering and analysis processes, and how the data is to be presented. Include the timeline of the project. |
7. Expected outcomes | What outcomes do you expect to have? E.g. policy change, increased crop yield, improved protection from scammers etc. |
8. Summary | Summarise your project’s key points to your audience. |
ENGR5001 PART 3: INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION OF GROUP PROCESS (50 points)
DUE ON FRIDAY 30th MAY 2025 (SEMESTER WEEK 14) 12pm (NOON)
This reflection is about how you felt you and your team worked together on this assignment. Group process refers to how you and your group work together to get the written proposal and presentation done. The reflection needs to be 2 pages in length, 12 pt font, with standard margins (2.4cm border) and double-spaced.

You will need to answer the following questions in your peer evaluation form:
- Describe how well members of your group were able to communicate with each other. Alternatively, describe any communication problems/issues within your group.
- Did you meet outside of class to establish goals and stay in tune with each other?
