From a Christian perspective, the belief that every human life is valuable stems from the foundational idea that all people are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). This intrinsic value implies that life is sacred and not to be taken lightly, including one’s own life. Consequently, many Christian theologians and ethicists consider both suicide and euthanasia to be moral transgressions, as they contradict God’s sovereignty over life and death. According to the sixth commandment, “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13, NIV), taking a life — including one’s own or assisting in ending another’s — is viewed as a violation of divine law.
Suicide, often resulting from mental illness or despair, is tragic and complex. Yet, the act itself is often seen as rejecting God’s plan or denying His ability to heal and restore (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). Likewise, euthanasia — even if carried out with compassionate intent to relieve suffering — is viewed by many Christians as overstepping human boundaries and infringing on divine authority over life and death (Evans, 2018). Christian doctrine emphasizes that suffering has redemptive value and that enduring hardship can lead to spiritual growth and deeper faith (Romans 5:3-5).
However, it is important to approach this topic with empathy and recognize the immense pain that leads individuals to consider such decisions. While the act may be considered sinful, many Christian communities stress God’s grace and mercy toward those who suffer (Psalm 34:18).
In conclusion, I agree that suicide and euthanasia contradict the belief in the sanctity of life and are therefore considered sins within Christian ethics. However, these issues must be addressed with compassion, understanding, and a focus on God’s love and redemptive power.
