For the 7 current events paragraphs (body paragraphs 2 through 8), students will choose 7 current events topics/issues that are also happening in the novel and find a news or current events article and an quote from the novel that aligns with the topic or issue. The goal is to show to the reader that issues and topics happening in our world today are also occurring in the novel, thus making the novel relevant to twenty-first century readers.Body paragraphs 9 and 10 will be based on the scholarly articles. 

Step 1: Research Proposal

Proposed Thesis Statement:(one sentence) 

Topic Overview:(about 300 words) 

Research Questions:Develop a list of at least five questions that are driving your interest in the topic and that mayserve as a starting point for the essay. 

Methodology:In about 300 words, describe what method(s) you will utilize to conduct your research. Somequestions may include, but are not limited to, the following: What types of sources will youutilize for this project? How will each source type benefit your research? Are there any sourcetypes that you are excluding? How will you ensure that the research in your essay is valid andverifiable? Consult with your professor for additional methodological questions and generalguidance. 

Proposed Outline:Students have flexibility in terms of the structure of this outline. Please work with your instructorto develop an outline format that fits your approach. At minimum, this section must include abreakdown of the major sections of the essay and the topic or question that each essay will cover. 

Works Cited:On a separate page, include your preliminary list of sources in a formal Works Cited page. Atthis point, you need to have a minimum of five secondary sources listed here. For the finalResearch Essay, students will need at least 11 secondary sources (including 4 scholarly sources). 

Step 2 :Annotated Bibliography

The Annotated Bibliography is designed to review, summarize, and assess each of the secondarysources to be included in the Research Essay. The research process includes selecting appropriatesecondary sources, evaluating the sources, summarizing the sources, and determining how eachsource will support the Research Essay thesis. 

An annotation (sometimes called an abstract or precis) is a condensed summary of the mainpoints of a source, helping the student-researcher to identify, analyze, and collect information tobe included in the Research Essay. In other words, someone who has not read the source shouldhave a good overview of the content of the source by reading the annotation. Students will writean annotation for EACH secondary source included in the Research Essay (a minimum of 11).Each annotation will be one short paragraph in length and include the following pieces: 

1. Introduce the author’s main point or argument. (1 sentence).2. Explain the author’s main point or argument (4-5 sentences).3. Choose a quote (or two) that may be included in the essay.
