Significant Decade Literature Review. Students will conduct a brief academic literature review examining a significant decade (of their choosing) in special education. The review should highlight historical/legal, advocacy, and policy attainments that have impacted children and families receiving special education services. Instructions Introduction. This assignment requires you to clearly identify and introduce the decade of focus (e.g., 1975-1985), and the historical/legal, advocacy, and policy attainments within the selected decade. Provide a clear and concise, but brief descriptor of the attainment within the chosen decade. In this section, you are to make the case for why this decade is significant by summarizing the historical/legal, advocacy, and policy attainments in said decade. Note: You are examining the same 10-year period for each of the three categories (i.e., Historical/Legal, Advocacy, and Policy). This section should not exceed two pages. Attainments and Impact. Based on delving into the pertinent academic literature base, provide a comprehensive synthesis of attainments within the chosen decade and fully explain how said attainment impacts children and families receiving special education services. Attainments- Your paper should describe more than three attainments within the selected decade for each of the areas examined (e.g., Historical/Legal, Advocacy, Policy). In each area examined, you are expected to rely on and cite seven or more empirical research articles (literature). Impact- Your paper should provide a detailed descriptor of three or more ways the attainments have impacted children/families receiving special education services, then and now. Note: For each area (i.e., Historical/Legal, Advocacy, Policy), the synthesis of attainments sections should be approximately two pages, the impact approximately one page. Closing Discussion. The paper should also provide a closing discussion of the attainments described. Discussion should include a thorough discussion of implications and next steps and propose practical solutions to the issues and implications for each of the overall historical/legal, advocacy, and policy attainments discussed in the paper. This section should not exceed two pages. References. This is a literature review assignment; as such, you must locate and utilize empirical research literature, position papers, legislative or policy documents, not websites, Google, periodicals, blogs, or other periodicals. Every citation utilized in the paper should appear on this list. These references should also appear as in-text citations within the paper and adhere to the most recent APA guidelines. Note: This is going to require considerable library research to collect, read, and synthesize 21 or more unique sources published within the chosen decade. Mechanics. This paper should be typed, double-spaced, utilize Times New Roman font, and 1” margins. Paper must also utilize and reflect the most recent APA Edition guidelines, specifically for title page, headings, in-text and reference page citations. Superior spelling and grammar use is expected. APA expectations for this course are briefly summarized here. Paper length and template and scoring rubric. For each area (i.e., Historical/Legal, Advocacy, Policy), the synthesis of attainments should be approximately two pages, the impact approximately one page, and the overall paper not to exceed 15 pages (not including the reference list). You are required to utilize this assignment template to format your paper and utilize the scoring rubric for guidance to ensure you are submitting a product that exceeds expectations.
