Diagnosis That could Benefit from an Evidence-based Approach.
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a complex clinical syndrome characterized by inefficient myocardial performance, resulting in insufficient blood supply to the body. CHF results from any disorder that impairs ventricular filling or ejection of blood to the systemic circulation (Malik, 2023). These patients usually present with shortness of breath, weakness, edema, especially in the lower extremities, weight gain, chest pain and malaise. If left untreated these patients can become hospitalized or even death. Patients usually get treated with diuretics, a change of diet and a change of lifestyle. It is essential to use evidence-based practice to treat and manage CHF.
In this paper I will describe congestive heart failure and how it can benefit from an evidence-based practice approach. I’ll provide a detailed rationale for the significance and benefit of applying an evidence-based practice approach. I will also explain the criteria that should be considered when determining credible resources such as journal articles and websites. I will also discuss the credibility and reverence of the evidence and resources within the research of heart failure. When doing the research, I will explain the importance of incorporating the credibility of the data into evidence -based practice model.
Determining Credibility of Resources
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the combination of Clinical expertise and expert opinion, and it is used for problem-solving and decision-making in healthcare. The criteria that should be considered when determining credibility, a set of questions the researcher can ask before considering using the source. Who is the writer? How recent is the source? What is the writer’s purpose? and did the author list the resources and references. One of the first places to complete research is medical journal articles. Medical journals from an accredited website could be a great source of information. One website where nurses can find these journals is EBSCOhost (capella.edu) where the database is run by EBSCO publishing. Finding information through a school or hospital’s website can be a great way to make sure the information provided is credible. According to Onstott, D nurses play a vital role in patient outcomes that can lead quality improvement standards on their units to improve patient care during the transition from hospital to home (Onstott, 2021). Within most hospitals and medical facilities have computer where the staff can access the information need to provide the appropriate teaching to the patients.
Analyze the Credibility and relevance of Resources regarding CHF
One method that can be used to analyze the credibility and relevance of a source is using the CRAAP method. According to (Wertgen & Diggs, 2020) using the CRAAP method the source will have Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose. Furthermore, looking out for grammatical errors, broken links, and missing information can also help with credibility. The CRAAP method is the most useful to me when searching for disease processes. The outline of the CRAAP method is very clear, precise and easy to use. When looking for sources, one must make sure the source is within or updated within the last five years. The sources are from a peer reviewed article or a vetted website, and make sure it’s an independent study with no bias. One way the information that might affect validation processes is the credibility of the source. Information about source credibility can signal to the reader whether information provided by the source is believable and thus bears a strong conceptual relationship to the validity of information (Wertgen & Richter, 2020).
Evidence-Based Practice Model Iowa
There are several EBP models to choose from, for example; Iowa, Stetler, and the Ottawa model to name a few. Using evidence-based practice models can make it easier to determine the credibility and relevance of the sources. The Iowa model of EBP focuses on the entire healthcare system including patient, physician, nurse, infrastructure to implement and guide practice decision based on best available research and evidence (Titler et al.,2001). The Iowa model has six steps According to (Titler et al.,2001) the steps are 1. Identify problem 2. Determine whether the problem is a healthcare organization priority 3. Consider a team’s topic of interest 4. Evaluate the availability of evidence 5. If credible and reliable evidence is available, navigate the change and 6. Evaluate pilot for level of success. Using the steps of the Iowa model as a guide to EBP will provide structure and can almost guarantee success. It is important to incorporate credible evidence into the EBP model to address any medical diagnosis, especially CHF. Within the medical field one must use factual evidence based and objective data because the more accurate the information the better the patient outcomes. The Iowa model is especially important because it can be used as a guide to help nurses improve with patient cand and outcomes.
Conclusion
In this assignment I explained the importance of determining credibility of evidence and resources. I described congestive heart failure and how patients can benefit from an evidence-based approach. I reviewed the rationale for the importance and benefit of applying EBP. I also explain the criteria that should be considered when determining credible resources such as journal articles and websites. With all the right steps being followed within the Iowa model one can determine the credibility of evidence and resources.
